The Supernatural Bundle by Bundle Stars

The Supernatural Bundle is being promoted as ten Steam games, but in reality it is actually 13 titles. As this is a themed bundle the titles all leans towards the gruesome or horror side of the spectrum which is definitely not a bad thing for fans of the genre. Despite a couple of repeats there are still plenty of titles in this bundle that have never been bundled before making it a good deal for the asking price.

Splatter – Blood Red Edition

Splatter thrusts you into a top down film-noir style world where you play as one man against the onslaught of zombies and monsters. In the single player story mode you’ll travel through 16 levels while performing quests and talking to NPCs. The campaign features some nice cut-scenes and voice acting that instantly reminded us of the classic Max Payne titles. As the game is viewed from a top down perspective you have to deal with lights and shadows that can influence your line of sight. The environments also feature some destructible objects and you can collect money which is then used to upgrade your guns. Enhancing the longevity of the game is an arcade mode with online leaderboards as well as local multiplayer for up to four players. The abundance of action and film-noir style atmosphere of the game sets it apart and makes for an engrossing experience. This is also the first time that the game has appeared in a bundle.

Blackbay Asylum

The second title in this bundle is also viewed from a top down perspective, but couldn’t be more different in tone and style than the first. In Blackbay Asylum you actually play as a mentally unstable killer who has been committed to the asylum only to find that he is able to leave his cell. Unfortunately, the hospital appears to have been taken over by some ancient evil that has killed most of the occupants in the most gruesome ways possible. This leaves your character, Dougle Dunaheiw, to explore the creepy hospital while attempting to figure out what happened. Although quite a dark game, Blackbay Asylum has a very macabre sense of humor and is definitely not afraid to offend as demonstrated by the lengthy disclaimer it opens with. While there are monsters and traps to face the game also has its fair share of puzzles. This is not a game for the faint of heart, but it does offer quite a unique experience that can suck you in. Blackbay Asylum has never been bundled before and normally sells for $19.99 on Steam.

The trailblazer for this bundle is Urban Trial Freestyle, which as the name suggests, allows you to take a freestyle trials bike on a rampage through urban environments. While the game shares plenty of similarities with the Trials series from Ubisoft, it is still an enjoyable ride with some impressive looking levels. The game includes 47 levels that span five different environments, and sometimes the backgrounds are so chaotic that it is easy to get distracted! Your goal on each level is to traverse all the obstacles in your way using your bike and reaching the end zone as fast as possible. Between levels you can also customize your rider and bike, but I would have liked to see more options for these. Overall, the game is a nice alternative to the Ubisoft titles and quite entertaining in its own right. This is the first time that it has appeared in a bundle and it includes Steam Achievements as well as Trading Cards.

Next up we have Dracula 4 and Dracula 5, which is set in the same universe as the first three titles, but features much better visuals and new characters. In Dracula 4 you play as an art restorer named Ellen Cross who embarks on a mission that spans Europe in search of a famous portrait featuring Vlad Tepes. Dracula 5 continues the story of Ellen as she returns to New York and runs into the mysterious Shadow of the Dragon brotherhood again. Despite being called the “Special Steam Edition” these titles don’t really make use of any exclusive Steam features such as achievements or trading cards. Nevertheless, both games offer an intriguing point and click experience and is definitely a step up visually from the first three titles. These two titles normally retail for $19.99 together, but both have been bundled before.

Play as private investigator Peter “Pete” O`Brannon in this B-movie style first person shooter. A case of insurance fraud turns into something much worse when Pete visits the deceased cabin in New England and finds himself facing supernatural enemies. The whole premise behind Into The Dark is that it is so bad that its good, so if you enjoy trashy B-movies you might enjoy the gore, terrible jokes and abundance of pop culture references in this game. The visuals are nothing special and the audio quality is downright shocking, but the game is not without its charm. You can even watch the full “Night of the living dead” movie ingame, which must be a first. Anyone looking for a “serious” experience will probably not like the fact that this game doesn’t take itself very seriously, but it is certainly worth checking out for a laugh or two. The game usually sells for $9.99, but it has been bundled multiple times before.

The third and final top down title for this bundle is Larva Mortis. Playing as a 19th century agent for good, you must battle supernatural creatures that range from werewolves and vampires to spiders, bats and the undead. The game provides you with an arsenal of weapons and randomly generated missions set in a variety of locations. Gameplay wise you simply move from room to room killing everything that moves which can be repetitive, but the over the top action is quite entertaining. The wide variety of enemies keeps things fresh and the soundtrack is also pretty good. Larva Mortis has been bundled multiple times before and has seen some steep discounts on Steam as well, but if you have somehow missed out this bundle is a great opportunity to try it out.

Necronomicon: The Dawning of Darkness came out back in 2001, which makes it one of the oldest releases in this bundle. Obviously the visuals are extremely dated, but even this could have been forgiven if the gameplay was up to scratch. Unfortunately, this is not the case and even big fans of works based on the writing of H.P Lovecraft will find very little to like here. Set in 1927, the game casts you in the role of William H. Stanton who is drawn into the world of the occult after a strange visit by his friend Edgar. The game is set in New England and requires you to solve puzzles as you unravel the mystery of the Necronomicon. Thanks to the poor visuals, missing content and bugs there is very little to recommend about this release though. This is the first time that Necronomicon: The Dawning of Darkness has been bundled, but don’t expect too much from this one.

Pixel Puzzles: UndeadZ followed hot on the heels of Pixel Puzzles: Japan and features the same addictive puzzle gameplay, but with an extra dash of blood and gore. We had this to say about the game back when it was first released: “After the calm experience that was Pixel Puzzles: Japan, we were quite surprised by what Pixel Puzzles: UndeadZ had in store for us. The inclusion of zombies that you have to shoot while solving jigsaw puzzles adds a whole new dimension to the game and ensures that there is never a dull moment. Fans of traditional jigsaw puzzles might not agree, but personally we loved the new action oriented elements of the game.” The game was enjoyable enough to earn itself a score of 9/10 from us and since then the developers have updated with a freeplay mode which removes the zombie attacks, achievements and other random fixes. This is the first time that the game has been bundled and is a great addition to this bundle.

White Noise Online offers an interesting take on the whole Slender Man genre, but as the name suggests, throws some multiplayer into the mix. You can choose a character from a group with their own pros and cons and then have to search locations in the dark in order to find recorders. Of course, there are some spooky creatures in the area with you to make things more interesting. Although you can play on your own the game is best experienced with a team of four. There are a couple of issues, such as the slow walking speed of characters, but overall the game is enjoyable in short bursts. Some more environments and monsters would have improved the experience, but checking out the replay screen after each round is quite amusing. White Noise Online is another title that has been bundled multiple times before, but even if you grabbed it from another bundle this is a great opportunity to give it a friend who can join you in the game.

Last, but not least, is Zombie Solitaire, which does exactly what it says in the name. The inevitable zombie apocalypse has arrived and the city is crawling with undead. Your only hope for salvation is to make it to a zombie-free island, but the only way to do so is by completing a few games of solitaire. There are a couple of minigames on offer as well, but most of your time with Zombie Solitaire will be spent completing the more than 100 solitaire levels that is set across nine locations. To make things a bit more interesting there are ten power-up cards to use and the usual three star rating system to show how well you have done. The visuals are crisp and the solitaire themed gameplay is as addictive as ever, so Zombie Solitaire is a great way to unwind when you don’t feel like playing something more involved. The game usually sells for $6.99 on Steam and this is the first time that it has been bundled.

Overall the Supernatural bundle has a nice selection of horror themed titles to offer fans of the genre. The bundle is worth it for the titles that have never been bundled before alone, so the inclusion of a couple of duds doesn’t detract from the value too much. Titles like Pixel Puzzles: UndeadZ and Zombie Solitaire will keep players hooked for hours alone, so we have no problem recommending this bundle. There’s not much time left to get your hands on this deal though, so head over to the official Bundle Stars website and snap up a copy. You’ll also find plenty of other great deals waiting for you there.

So worth it for Splatter alone. It is such an underrated game.

This. It would have been so much better with online co-op so im still holding thumbs for a sequel.

Not gonna lie, the Zombie Solitaire game has me hooked. Even with the Steam Halloween sale going on I don’t regret the €3.59 I dropped on the Sup bundle.
