Mahjong Quest
Mahjong Quest is a single-player tile matching game where you play as a young child, Kwami, trying to restore balance to a land ravaged by dragons. Apart from the rather lengthy "Story" mode the game also features "Classical" and "Puzzle" modes, each with further variations. Considering the amount of content this game has, it will take you a while to get through everything.
Mahjong Quest is based around the tile matching variant of the game, commonly called "Shanghai" and not the four players, proper Mahjong game. In story mode the goal is not to clear all the tiles on the board but rather to uncover and match the two golden Yin/Yang tiles. Tiles are removed from the board by matching two of the same kind that is not stuck between or under other tiles. While this sounds very simple and indeed starts off this way, the difficulty soon ramps up. To provide some variation; certain levels require you to match three tiles at a time to clear them away. Special tiles also make an appearance, allowing you to destroy walls, swap tiles or remove all tiles of a certain type. These special tiles are introduced gradually and genuinely add to the challenge of the game. If you prefer something a bit more traditional, the "Classic" mode has you covered with more than eighty boards without any interruptions from talking Chinese Zodiac animals. The "Puzzle" mode adds an extra twist to the boards, requiring some problem solving skills. Great variations to these modes such as speed, scramble, memory and ghost pushes the gameplay even further. While the audio and visuals are not the greatest, I had a blast playing Mahjong Quest. According to Steam, I have spent close to 30 hours playing the game which is saying a lot. The "hint" feature which you can use if you have to or less matches left is very handy and the ability to trade a life in order to skip a level ensures that things never become too frustrating. You can also undo your moves but remember that the boards are timed. The colorful visuals and simple storyline might fool you into thinking that this is a children's title but the game is suitable for all ages. It is not going to blow you away but it will certainly keep you busy for quite a while.
