Mass Effect 2
After saving the entire galaxy from destruction in the previous game, Commander Sheppard is back and this time he has a whole heap of new trouble on his plate. Human colonies across the galaxy are vanishing without a trace and nobody has any idea who is behind it. Even Sheppard's hard work to warn everyone about the Reaper threat seem to be in vain as the powers that be blame the Geth for everything that happened in the last game and considering the problem solved. There's only one man up to the task of assembling some of the deadliest individuals in the galaxy to help him in a mission that is best described as suicidal.
Once again the plot is one of Mast Effect 2's strongest points so to say too much about it would be criminal but Bioware has definitely delivered the goods. Not only is the story gripping from the word go but the characters are memorable and your choices will have a big impact on proceedings which makes the whole game even more involving. Starting Mass Effect 2 you have the choice of importing your character (thereby changing some aspects of the game based on your actions in the previous game) or starting from scratch. Bioware has tweaked and streamlined the interface to perfection which is great as Mass Effect 1 felt a bit clumsy at times. Some diehard computer gamers might find the game a bit too "console-ish" for their tastes but I think the majority will love the changes. The action sequences now resemble Gears Of War as you run from cover to cover, picking off enemies and managing your team members. The action can be paused at any time to micro manage things but its entirely possible to order around team members and make use of special powers purely through the use of hot keys so as to not break up the flow of the action. This is a Bioware title so the in-depth conversations and moral dilemmas are still present too. The driving sections found in the last game has been given the boot (good riddance) but you still have to travel the galaxy, scanning planets for minerals and exploring for missions. There's always something to do or somewhere to go in this game so you'll definitely be getting value for money. Visually Mass Effect 2 is good but not groundbreaking. There's been a lot of speculation that this is due to it being developed to run on the Xbox360 as well but overall I found the visuals to be more than adequate if not downright stunning in some areas. The voice work is superlative and there are some real talent amongst the voice actors. The music and sound effects on the other hand were good but not great. If you were a fan of the first game then you should by all means get your hands on Mass Effect 2. This is really one of those games you'll want to play multiple times just to see and experience everything it has to offer. There's quite a few tough choices to be made that will probably impact what's going to happen in Mass Effect 3 but it's hard to imagine how Bioware is going to top this one. While it's by no means perfect (whose great idea was it to introduce ammo and fuel into the game all of a sudden!?) Mass Effect 2 is a must have title for fans of the genre. In fact the worst thing about it is going to be the wait for Mass Effect 3!
