Sam & Max S01E04 - Abe Lincoln Must Die!
More than halfway through their episodic season of adventures, Sam & Max is called upon to solve their toughest case yet. The duo is tasked with investigating the president of the United States! It would appear that he has been acting more than a little strange lately (well stranger than usual) and only the freelance police has the skills to set things right.
When this new episode, titled "Abe Lincoln Must Die!" opened with the freelance police arriving in front of the White House it filled me with hope. The previous three episodes all started out in the freelance police office and to be honest it was starting to feel a little stale. Unfortunately, my joy was short lived as one of the first things you have to do is return to the office and explore the surrounding streets. If you have been playing since episode one you'll know the drill by now. I realize that releasing an episode per month can't be easy but it is starting to feel like some quality is being sacrificed in order to maintain the high turnover. All the running jokes like Bosco's latest paranoid disguise and Sybills newest career continue plus all the usual padding. The recycled locations and characters are really starting to lose their shine at this point and I am beginning to fear that the episodic nature of the series might be restricting the license. Fortunately, the humor still shines and the story for this installment is wackier than ever. With scenarios like Max running for president against a giant, talking statue of Abe Lincoln, you can be sure of quite a few laughs. The story is a bit heavy on the political satire for my taste but it's still good. I wasn't thrilled to see the Soda Poppers make a return but at least they fit the story. The puzzles were once again pretty easy and the only time that I was stumped was when I needed an item and didn't notice how it was hidden in an obscure corner of one of the screens. With only three new locations and a large reliance on old locations, the game sometimes feels like it has too much padding which is not good considering that it can be completed in less than three hours. The game also requires you to travel back and forth between locations in order to solve simple puzzles, which is somewhat annoying. Visually, the game looks the same as previous episodes and the voice acting is still good. A special mention should go to the new song (and dance) about war which is brilliant. This far into the series you should probably have decided to commit to all the episodes or given up already. While I would have liked to see more locations and characters I can understand the constraints that Telltale Games face. As of November 5 2007 this episode is completely free so check it out for yourself and see.
