Sam & Max S01E06 - Bright Side Of The Moon
The adventures of Sam & Max have taken them to all kinds of exotic (and not so exotic) locations this season but for this last episode they head for the moon. In case you are wondering how they get there, well they simply jump in the Desoto and drive. If this sounds strange and implausible to you then you have definitely not played the preceding episodes or read the comic by Steve Purcell, both activities that I strongly encourage.
Sam and Maxi discover the identity of the dastardly villain that has been using hypnosis all season to cause havoc, at the start of the episode, so make sure you have played the previous episodes to avoid spoilers. The game starts on the moon but obviously you'll have to head back to the freelance police neighborhood sooner or later. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the familiar surroundings are now bathed in the twilight of the full moon and that Telltale has recorded some new description text again. Clearly they have been listening to fans which are heartening to see. While this episode sticks very closely to the established formula and running jokes, puzzles have become a lot harder. With props like the Lunar- Lander, magic hats and vomit inducing talisman, you are going to have to think out of the box. It can occasionally be a bit frustrating and at one point I only managed to discover that an object needed for a puzzle can be picked up because I was clicking on old set pieces to hear the new descriptions. This item has been unobtainable for five episodes so it is easily overlooked. While there are a few new locations, there are no new characters although most of the old ones make a return. The story that ties everything together is not the greatest but it works well enough considering the episodic nature of the game. You will definitely want to play the previous episodes first or you might feel a bit lost with this one. The humor is still brilliant although perhaps not quite as sharp as it was in Reality 2.0. A lot of the stuff like Max's comment that he feels like he has been working for seven months straight or that the "Tic Tac Doom" arcade game is "too short and easy" shows that Telltale pay a lot of attention to critique about the series. Since Sam & Max is pretty much the only series that has successfully managed to deliver a full episodic season I'm sure they will learn from this experience and come back with an even better follow-up. The visuals and audio remain largely the same which is no surprise considering that everything is still running on the same engine and the episodes was put together in a very short space of time. If you have somehow managed to miss out on this season I heartily recommend that you pick up the boxed version which packs all six episodes along with some cool bonus extras and a full sized poster. Kudos to Telltale for succeeding where so many others have failed. Oh and for bringing back the six foot canine detective and hyperkinetic rabitty thingy duo.
