SteamWorld Dig 2 takes everything that made the original such an addictively entertaining game and polishes them up even more. Digging around for treasure to sell in town to upgrade your gear is a lot of fun, but there’s also plenty of puzzle platforming to do. Throw in some great visuals and a funky soundtrack, and you have a game that definitely should not be missed.

Gameplay: Starts very simple, but becomes very addictive very quickly.

Graphics: Detailed visuals and great character designs.

Sound: Features a varied soundtrack and nice sound effects

Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a homage to the original game that does far more than simply slapping on some high-resolution textures. Instead, it makes use of the Legend engine to ensure that the game looks and plays much smoother than ever before. Most levels retain the spirit of the originals but have been redesigned to accommodate Lara’s new move set and grappling hook. Unfortunately, the game does have some technical issues and the controls, as well as the camera, doesn’t always cooperate, which makes it an occasionally frustrating experience.

Gameplay: Stays true to the original game, but gives everything a modern makeover.

Graphics: Makes use of the Legend engine to give the original game a visual revamp.

Sound: Decent music, sound effects, and voice acting

CARRION

CARRION is a great, although brief game that gives players the chance to go wild in a research facility as a flesh-eating tentacle monster. The game is extremely bloody, but between all the mayhem there are also plenty of puzzles to solve. Your creature can unlock a ton of new abilities, which opens up new areas to explore, but the lack of a map could frustrate some players. Despite some repetition and a few small niggles we thoroughly enjoyed our time with CARRION and the game comes highly recommended.

Gameplay: Plays like a very violent Metroidvania, except without the platforming elements.

Graphics: The pixel art looks great and the animations are smooth, but more unique locations would have been a big plus.

Sound: Atmospheric music and great sound effects

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut

The Witcher is a huge game with plenty to see and do, but there’s also plenty of padding and tedium to wade through in the process. It features an interesting protagonist and the dark fantasy setting makes for a nice change of pace. The “Enhanced Edition” updates a lot of things in the original release that was lacking, such as the animations and writing, but it is still far from perfect. Still, those who have the patience to put up with its quirks will enjoy the experience.

Gameplay: Does things a little differently from traditional action RPGs, but it is still fun despite some tedium.

Graphics: Some of the visual elements look great, but some of the character models still look downright ugly.

Sound: The soundtrack is very good, but the voice acting is a mixed bag

Rock of Ages

Although the key to success in Rock of Ages is often speed instead of strategy, it is still an interesting mix of genres that is a lot of fun to play. The campaign mode is very funny, but also very short and easy, so you’ll want to play with friends to get the most out of this game. The tower defense elements are a bit underutilized using a giant boulder to crush everything in your path is so much fun that it doesn’t really matter.

Gameplay: Very entertaining, but not as much strategic depth as you might think.

Graphics: The art style is very unique and funny.

Sound: Very juvenile, but once again it’s hard not to smile while playing

Primal Light

Primal Light is a linear 2D platformer with great pixel art and punishing gameplay. It is very much an old-school title, so you can expect limited lives, checkpoints, and having to redo the entire level with each continue. Most platformers have eased up on these things, which means Primal Light can be enjoyably challenging or frustratingly difficult, depending on your skill level. However, the game was updated after its release, making the easiest mode more accessible to less skilled players.

Gameplay: The game can be brutal at times, but it’s nothing that can’t be overcome with some patience or playing on the easiest mode.

Graphics: Primal Light captures the 16-bit aesthetic perfectly.

Sound: The soundtrack for this game is moody and eerie

A Plague Tale: Innocence

A Plague Tale: Innocence is not only a great looking game with a unique setting, but the strong narrative focus makes it very engrossing too. The combination of stealth and puzzle-solving could easily have been very annoying, but barring a few frustrating sections the game is actually quite entertaining. It is also unrelentingly grim, which might deter some players, but between all the horror there’s also some heartwarming moments. Single-player narrative focussed games such as A Plague Tale: Innocence is becoming rarer, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to play this one.

Gameplay: A nice mixture of stealth and puzzles that never really veers too far in either direction.

Graphics: The visuals are extremely detailed and the environments surprisingly varied.

Sound: Good voice acting and some soaring tunes

Flying Red Barrel – The Diary of a Little Aviator

Flying Red Barrel makes its long-overdue debut on Steam with this update on the classic bullet hell shooter. It features five challenging levels, multiple bosses, and a scoring system that is a lot more advanced than it looks. The addition of modern resolution and controller options is a welcome touch, but the gameplay is still the same as what purists fell in love with when the game was first released back in 2007.

Gameplay: Very challenging, but also very addictive when you get the hang of it.

Graphics: Not exactly cutting-edge, but still charming.
