Open Sorcery

Open Sorcery is a gripping text adventure that opts for an intuitive keyword based interface over a cumbersome parser. The result is a game that is streamlined, very engrossing and so well written that you won’t want to stop reading until you see the end credits. It is not a very long game, but there are a number of different endings and lots of branching story paths to get to them, so the replay value is very high. It is not a game for people who hate reading or must have the best graphics in their games, but anyone with even a passing interest in magic or technology should find it thoroughly enjoyable.

Gameplay: Simple enough that anyone can play it, but so engrossing that you will want to complete it multiple times just to experience everything.

Graphics: Virtually non-existent, but it is a style that doesn’t hamper the experience in the least.

Sound: Maybe a bit too minimal, but it allows players to read the story without too much distractions

Knock-Knock is not a very conventional game, which is both a blessing and a curse. The title can easily confuse and frustrate players as it could be more forthcoming with what it expects from you. However, once you figure out the gameplay mechanics, you’ll find it can be a fascinating and creepy experience. Wandering around a house in the dark while fixing lights and hiding from ghosts may not sound very original, but the way in which Knock-Knock does things certainly is. Ultimately, it is another one of those love-it-or-hate-it games, which makes it hard to recommend to everyone.

Gameplay: Frequently frustrating and quite repetitive, but also strangely compelling.

Graphics: The 2D art is very unique and looks great.

Sound: There is not much music, but the sound effects are excellent

Incredipede is a unique puzzle title that challenges you to complete levels by controlling the muscles of one of the most bizarre characters ever to feature in a game. In easy mode, you are provided with a unique design for your creature every level, but in hard mode, it is up to you to create your own working designs. Throw in a sandbox mode as well as a level editor, and you have a game that can keep you entertained for far longer than expected. This game also has some of the most unique and eye-catching visual styles that we have seen in a while.

Gameplay: Incredipede is quite challenging and frequently frustrating but always fun.

Graphics: The art style is gorgeous, although the animations can be slightly creepy.

Sound: The audio is very sparse but quite fitting

Always The Same Blue Sky…

Always The Same Blue Sky is a visual novel about a student who transfers to yet another school in yet another remote location, but things are a little different this time. This is thanks to the presence of Kira, a girl who lives on the island and attends the same school. Life is a little more exciting and mysterious after Kira offers to show the protagonist around the island in this short visual novel. The game has flaws, but the price tag is low enough to make it a decent impulse buy.

Gameplay: There are not a lot of choices, and the game is relatively short, but the story is interesting.

Graphics: The sprite artwork is good, but the backgrounds are a little uneven in quality.

Sound: The game lacks voice acting, but the soundtrack is quite good

Birds have killed your dad, and it is up to you to seek vengeance! Bird Assassin is a blood-soaked action game where you walk from left to right and try to eradicate every bird crossing your path. It is action-packed but also a little repetitive, and with only nine levels, it won’t take very long to complete. Still, it is being sold at a very wallet-friendly price, so it is worth it if all you want is a few minutes of mindless entertainment.

Gameplay: The game features plenty of action but is a little repetitive and also quite short.

Graphics: The birds and main character have a lot of detail, but the backgrounds are lacking.

Sound: The sound effects are decent enough, and the lead character has a couple of funny quips

Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Don’t Dry

Creating a Leisure Suit Larry in this day and age sounded like a recipe for disaster, but somehow CrazyBunch managed to not just pull it off, but also did so in style. Wet Dreams Don’t Dry is an authentic Larry experience that is filled with corny puns, sexual innuendos, bad pick-up lines and more penis shaped objects than you can shake a stick at. The world in which Larry finds himself is a lot more progressive, but he is the same lovable loser that consistently manages to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. If you have fond memories of the original games, can handle some adult humor or love the point & click genre, then don’t miss out on Wet Dreams Don’t Dry.

Gameplay: Great puzzles and a rather lengthy adventure.

Graphics: Detailed and colorful, although the new art style may not be to everyones liking.

Sound: Good music and effects, but the highlight is Jan Rabson returning to voice Larry

Solving a murder mystery should be easy when you have the ability to shapeshift into any person you meet, but all is not as it seems in the quiet town of August. Step into the shapeshifting shoes of Sam and figure out whodunit in this latest FMV release by D’Avekki Studios. A girl has been murdered under mysterious circumstances and the clock is ticking as you put your unusual skills to the test. The Shapeshifting Detective is a solid title that will appeal to everyone who enjoys an unusual murder mystery and the story also provides plenty of replay value, so don’t miss out.

Gameplay: As this is an FMV game the interaction with the gameworld is obviously limited, but interrogating people is a blast and the shapeshifting mechanic makes for a novel experience.

Graphics: Not as much FMV footage as Doctor Dekker, but everything looks great in high definition.

Sound: The audio is superb and definitely contributes a lot to the atmosphere of the game

Lucy Got Problems avoids this trend by delivering a game that not only looks great, but which also has a laugh out loud story that is worth your time. If you can appreciate a story that isn’t afraid to indulge in fanservice and humor, then Lucy Got Problems deserves a spot in your library. It is still a very ecchi title, even in its “censored” format, but if you are a fan of the genre, then you will definitely have a blast

Prototype is one of those games where you can have hours of fun just messing around with the gameworld. Add in a bunch of gruesome and over the top moves and you have yourself quite an adventure. It is not without its flaws, but overall it is a very enjoyable game.

Gameplay: Lots of fun to be had.

Graphics: Quite gruesome.

Sound: Good voice acting and sound effects

Trace Memory is a interesting take on the very scarce point & click genre which actually fits the DS very well. Ashley’s tale of reuniting with her long lost father might not be the most gripping one but there is enough here to keep players hooked. If you have been playing these type of games for a long time however most of the puzzles will not pose much of a challenge and the game is very short overall. Newcomers should brace themselves for some head scratching however.

Gameplay: Traditional point & click gameplay mixed in with some DS centric twists.

Graphics: Basic but functional

Sound: Somber tunes and sparse sound effects
