Take control of one of four Urican demons and blast away enemies in this twin-stick shooter. Unfortunately, the colorful visuals and non-stop action cannot hide how shallow the gameplay is and how repetitive everything becomes after only a few rounds. The inclusion of local co-op and multiplayer modes adds some fun to the game, but there are much better options available for this genre.

Gameplay: Action-packed, but very repetitive and grindy.

Graphics: Colorful, but sometimes too chaotic for its own good.

Sound: Very average

Your Smile Beyond Twilight:黄昏下的月台上

The protagonist of Your Smile Beyond Twilight, Yunshan, returns to his small hometown for the first time in six years. A lot has happened in the meantime, but Yunshan still has some unresolved issues from his past that he has to deal with. However, upon arrival with his girlfriend Jingxuan in tow, Yunshan encounters a mysterious maiden who only he can see. This short kinetic novel can be completed in very little time, but the story is good enough to leave a lasting impact.

Gameplay: The story is short but well-written and engaging.

Graphics: There are only a few sprites and backgrounds, but they are all beautiful.

Sounds: The audio consists of Chinese voice acting and a beautiful soundtrack

Death’s Hangover

Help Death take back the souls stolen by Bastard Dracula in this Breakout-style game by Retro Army Limited. It features plenty of different levels, useful power-ups, and some big bosses. The game is easy to pick up and play, but finding all the souls can be challenging. The eighteen different endings, two-player mode, and level editor boost the replay value, though, and overall, the game is a decent choice for fans of the genre.

Gameplay: The game is challenging and entertaining.

Graphics: The pixel art visuals of Death’s Hangover look great.

Sound: The audio features decent sound effects and music

Forward to the Sky

Help a sword-wielding princess take on the skeletal enemies and traps of the sky tower in this third-person title by Animu Game. The visuals and audio are decent, but the game is just way too short and simple. It can be completed in less than two hours and most of it will be spent solving some basic puzzles along with the occasional bit of combat. With a bit more polish and a few more levels Forward to the Sky could have been great, but as it is there are much better options available.

Gameplay: The controls could definitely have been tighter and the overall experience is very short.

Graphics: Bright and colorful, but not much in terms of variety.

Sound: Passable background music and voice acting

Alien Scumbags

Alien Scumbags is an action-packed platform shooter filled with action, blood, gore, and pop culture easter eggs. It’s short enough to complete in one session, but the low asking price coupled with the high replay value makes it a no-brainer for fans of the genre.

Gameplay: Lots of monsters to shoot and secrets to find.

Graphics: A nice throwback to the era of pixel art platformers.

Sound: Great music, sound effects, and voice acting

From Donkey Kong to AiAi in Super Monkey Ball and Specter in Ape Escape, there’s no shortage of primates in video games. Soon there will be one more added to that list with Mac Biskwi by DigitalFox appearing in his own platform game later this year. Titled Mac Biskwi Adventures, this 2D platformer sees the little monkey living in the peaceful “Biscuits Island” until the arrival of evil creatures. Players will have to help Mac Biskwi to traverse colorful levels while defeating unique enemies and engaging in the age-old platform tradition of collecting things

Tested on Humans: Escape Room

Tested on Humans follows in the same escape room footsteps of its predecessor, Palindrome Syndrome. However, instead of the science fiction environments of the first game, ToH is a more grounded experience. Players take control of Alex, a woman who finds herself confined to a cell in what appears to be a medical facility. To avoid the fate of her fellow test subjects, Alex must solve several different puzzles that will ultimately lead to her freedom. The puzzles are challenging without being too obscure and the overall presentation is very good for an indie title. If you are a puzzle fan who enjoys thinking out of the box, then Tested on Humans comes highly recommended.

Gameplay: The puzzles are challenging and varied.

Graphics: The setting is more down-to-earth compared to Palindrome Syndrome, but still good.

Sound: The soundtrack is great and the voice acting is decent

Mutropolis

Join Henry Dijon in an archaeological adventure to save his kidnapped professor from the clutches of an ancient Egyptian god. Mutropolis is set in the year 5000 where Earth has become a wild and inhospitable place, so Henry will need his wits about him to succeed in his quest. Fortunately, Henry has a team of very capable colleagues assisting him on his rescue mission. Mutropolis requires some patience and out-of-the-box thinking, but it is a very impressive debut that deserves to be played by fans of the genre.

Gameplay: Some of the puzzles are tricky but very rewarding to solve.

Graphics: The hand-drawn visuals are beautiful and charming.

Sounds: Great voice acting and a nice chill soundtrack

LOVE BAKUDAN

Love Bakudan is an 18+ yuri visual novel with a unique premise and plenty of hot women to romance. When Haruka Mishimi inherits her grandmother’s erotic bookstore, she moves back to her childhood home of Akiyama where she finds a bevy of beautiful customers waiting to frequent her shop. With six unique romance routes, a fun bookselling mini-game, and plenty of optional erotic stories to unlock, Love Bakudan belongs in the library of every yuri fan.

Gameplay: Six romance routes that are completely unique from each other.

Graphics: Plenty of backgrounds and some nice character designs.

Sound: The music is good and there’s plenty of great sound effects

Donut County

Donut County gives players control of a hole in the ground and then asks them to swallow up everything in sight. The hole starts small but grows larger as it swallows up more of the scenery. For the most part, players simply move the hole around and watch things disappear down its depths, which is relaxing, but very easy. Some of the later levels introduce a few puzzle elements, but there’s nothing here that is going to tax anyone. That’s fine for players looking for a chill game to unwind with but also feels a bit like a missed opportunity as so much more could have been done with the concept.

Gameplay: Very easy to play and very relaxing, but don’t expect any sort of challenge.

Graphics: Simple, but quite charming.

Sound: The soundtrack is great and fits the style of the game
