The Wolf Among Us: Episode 03 - A Crooked MileA Crooked Mile is the third episode in a five episode season, so if you have not played the previous two episodes stop reading immediately. There is no way to review this episode without minor spoilers for the first two and trust me this is one story that you do not want to spoil.
A Crooked Mile marks the midway point of the season and continues with the strong storyline that characterized the first two episodes. If you think the revelations at the end of Smoke And Mirrors meant that the murder investigation was going to wrap up neatly then you have another thing coming. Sheriff Bigby Wolf is hot on the trail of the murder suspect, but outside forces seem intent on thwarting him at every turn and meanwhile the clock is ticking. Bigby still has to deal with the fact that most Fables think he is just using his position of authority as an excuse for indulging in his violent tendencies. Depending on the way that you react to situations, they might actually be right, so it's hard to blame anyone for distrusting the big bad wolf. Episode one and two turned up some pretty disturbing things during the murder investigation, but episode three manages to be just as engrossing. You once again interact with the cast of established characters, but there are a few new additions as well. As I have not read the comic books I don't know how significant the new characters are but the story is definitely picking up speed. Episode 03 doesn't have a lot of action scenes but the ones that do occur are used very effectively. The game really knows how to push buttons and showing restraint is not always easy. I got a few disapproving glances and messages stating that a character will remember my actions, which proves that my Bigby is not quite as reformed as he would like to be. Considering how much trouble seems to like following in Bigby's wake it's not easy being the good guy. Even when you are not choosing who to punch, you still get caught up in heated arguments where Bigby has to take sides. You can't please everyone all the time and The Wolf Among Us makes sure that you are aware of this fact. The dialogue is one again superb and Telltale is really at the top of their game when it comes to interesting conversations. As Bigby is rushing to track down a suspect there isn't a lot of time for idle chit chat but the game still manages to sneak in a few meaningful exchanges between characters. The episode is still set in Fabletown but in addition to the old scenes you also get to poke around a few new ones. At one point you actually have to choose between three locations to search for clues and depending on your choices there might not be time to visit all of them. The order in which you investigate the locations also factors into the equation which obviously increases the replay value. It is also no secret that Bigby finally gets the chance to unleash his inner beast, which is something that the previous two episodes have been slowly building up to. This episode ran without a hitch and the visuals are as excellent as always. Each scene is brimming with detail and captures the look and feel of the source material. The voice acting is also superb, although due to all the tension and emotion, it did feel like this episode was a bit more expletive laden than the previous ones. The runtime for the episode is about ninety minutes, which unfortunately flies by because it is so enthralling. I don't want to spoil anything about the closing minutes of this episode, but suffice to say that Telltale does not disappoint and I am eagerly awaiting episode four to find out what happens next. So far The Wolf Among Us has exceeded my expectations and has cemented Telltale's reputation for consistently delivering solid episodic content. There is very little that I can fault about this episode and I have no doubt that Telltale will be able to continue this momentum right up to an explosive finale.
