Start weak and build up your character until they are an unstoppable force. That is usually how progression works in games. Some games strip you of all powers at the start and require you to slowly regain them again, but Nephil’s Fall dares to do things a little differently. At key points in the game you will either have to sacrifice certain powers temporarily or even make permanent sacrifices, which will weaken your character. It is an interesting concept, which means players will actually have to improve their own skills and resourcefulness in order to make up for the abilities their character loses.

Nephil’s Fall might be a fantasy metroidvania platformer, but as the sacrifice feature demonstrates, it is not afraid to shake things up. You will have all the classic platformer mechanics at your disposal, such as running, rolling, jumping and double-jumping, but instead of travelling from left to right your character will travel in the opposite direction. This ties in with the story, which instead of progressing as you play, has already happening and requires you to discover what went wrong. The game will still feature plenty of exploring though, so expect to discover plenty of secrets and different paths.

Another aspect of the game that really drew our attention is the beautiful 2D art style. According to the developers the visuals have been inspired by Japanese culture, art and jRPGs, which would explain the unique look. The story, which focuses on Nephil awakening from a coma to find that the world it was supposed to be guarding is being corrupted also promises to be interesting.

Nephil’s Fall is close to 70% funded at the time of writing and has about 14 days left to reach its goal. It can also do with some votes over on Steam Greenlight, so check out the main features promised by the game below and then show it some support if it looks like something you might enjoy.

  • Classic platformer mechanics – run, jump, double-jump, roll!
  • Four essences of fire, water, earth and wind, which enhance your abilities and make you a demi-god.
  • Sacrifice your abilities to restore order to the world and discover what really happened.
  • Master each environment in your own play style.
  • Start strong with loads of abilities, but give them up along the way and become a master of those you have chosen to keep.

Does The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker meets Stardew Valley sound like your type of game? Well, that's exactly what the tropical adventure, Summer in Mara, is shaping up to be. It's a winning combination if ever there was one and, judging from the reception on Kickstarter, a lot of players agree. It's the tale of a girl named Koa who lives in peace on her home island. However, she has always felt the call of the ocean and the urge to explore, so she sets out to do just that with her boat.

Warhammer: Chaosbane (Eko Software)

Considering the source material, it really is surprising that the upcoming Warhammer: Chaosbane is the first every hack and slash set in this universe. Of course, there was Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr a while back, but Chaosbane is the first to use the Warhammer Fantasy world, which is honestly a much better fit for the genre. We were fortunate enough to try out the VIP beta of the game, which included the first act as well as two out of the four playable characters.

Not content with finally bringing Princess Maker 2 Refine to English speaking audiences, CFK, is also bringing a high definition remake of the original Wonder Boy to Steam. The first game in the series was released back in 1986 and made quite an impression in the arcades thanks to its fast paced side scrolling action. The success of the game also resulted in numerous ports and spin-off titles across various formats.

I don’t have the bucks to back it on kick starter right now but I did vote on Steam. Looking great, but the right to left scrolling has me worried because it sound a bit unnatural.
