The point & click adventure genre has seen a resurgence in recent years thanks to indie developers, but we haven’t seen many classic Myst-style puzzle adventures. This is about to change thanks to Zadbox Entertainment and their first major title, Quern – Undying Thoughts. Influenced by the works of Jules Verne and inspired by the visual style of the Myst series, Quern is a first person puzzle adventure where players get to explore a mysterious island.

The developers are fans of story driven games and wrote the entire backstory for the island before working on the story that players will experience. Finding themselves at the entrance to a deserted ancient city, players will be given free rein to explore their mysterious surroundings. Although it will feature an open world design and first person perspective, the heart of the game is still classic puzzle adventure gameplay. That means players will have to find hints and clues while collecting objects stored in an inventory until needed to solve a puzzle. Although the island is seemingly deserted and surrounded by oceans players will receive guidance from two different sources. On the one hand, there are the rational, logical letters left behind by a scientist and on the other the visions of spiritual guidance from an ancient spirit. It will be up to the players to decide whose guidance to follow in regards to the island.

Judging by the trailer and screenshots the developers definitely captures the style of the Myst titles. However, the game is powered by Unity 5, which means players will actually have the freedom to explore instead of just looking at a pre-rendered scenes. According to estimates by the developers it will take about 12-14 hours for players to complete this adventure.

Quern has already been Greenlit on Steam and at the time of writing it is also very close to reaching its Kickstarter funding goal. There is little less than a week remaining, so fans of the genre should definitely check out the trailer and show their support. We were very impressed by the visuals showcased in the trailer and the glimpses at the puzzles featured in the game also looks fascinating. Quern definitely looks like a very ambitious project, but judging by what we have seen so far the developers know what they are doing.

From Donkey Kong and Dig Dug to Gauntlet and Gradius, the 1980s were a golden era for classic video-game franchises. One of these franchises is Lode Runner, which was first released for the Apple II in 1983 and quickly moved on to other platforms. Its action-packed, yet puzzle-oriented gameplay made it an instant hit and even people like Alexey Pajitnov counted it amongst their favorite puzzle titles. Although there hasn’t been a shortage of new releases over the years, the last appearance of Lode Runner was back in 2012 on Android and iOS. Thankfully, this is about to change with the upcoming release of Lode Runner Legacy for PC.

Kriophobia By Fira Soft

Kriophobia claims to be a new take on Survival Horror which, while inspired by the core concepts of the genre, isn’t afraid to pull out a few surprises. The game made it through the Steam Greenlight process in only 13 days, but its Kickstarter campaign could do with a lot more attention. The game will allow players to take control of a geologist named Anna who got herself stuck on an island in northern Russia. Her study of seismic activity brought her to this remote area, but it is a solitude that she has sought out herself. It would appear that Anna is haunted by events from her past which is why she shuns civilization. However, when she falls into a sealed military complex by accident Anna has to save her colleagues while also confronting whatever it is lurking in the dark.

Don't Be Patchman by Naturally Intelligent

After receiving an email from Naturally Intelligent urging me to not be a Patchman, I had no choice but to check out why this character has such a bad rep. It turns out that Patchman used his celebrity status to help a drone army enslave the Sheeple, normally happy folk who used to live in harmony with nature. Through a bizarre series of events, Patchman dies after eating a vending machine, but is brought back to life by a kind old granny who sewed him back together. Now it will be up to you to help Patchman redeem himself and rescue the Sheeple from the Drone army.

The old Myst games were more a case of style over substance but you are right the video for Quern is very impressive. As long as the puzzles are not too obscure this looks like something I’ll enjoy.
