Just Cause

Just Cause

Just Cause starts with a bang, but runs out of steam way too early. The huge gameworld is certainly impressive, but up close the flaws are all too apparent. Once you add in easy missions, repetitive gameplay and a lot of annoying quirks the shine soon wears off. There is still loads of fun to be had by messing around, but do not expect this to be close to Grand Theft Auto.

Gameplay: Had a lot of potential, but unfortunately fall somewhat short.

Graphics: Very impressive from a distance, but not so good up close.

Sound: Not very memorable

Meteos

Meteos

At first Meteos seem to be much too simple, especially considering how crowded the falling block puzzle genre is, but one only has to play it for a few hours to discover how deep and addictive it really is. Definitely another essential DS puzzler.

Gameplay: Extremely simple but very addictive.

Graphics: Nothing special but still looks good.

Sound: Q Entertainment knows how to craft some catchy tunes

Crash Team Racing

Crash Team Racing

A nice departure from the platform games in the series and packed with enough challenges to keep you busy for ages. There’s not much here you haven’t seen before, but Crash fans should have a good time.

Gameplay: Pretty straightforward, but still fun.

Graphics: Quite good all things considered.

Sound: All the familiar Crash Bandicoot voices and sound effects

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare

American Nightmare offers more action and less atmosphere than the original game, but it is still a compelling addition to the series. With only three locations to explore, it lacks the depth of the first game, but the story is still very interesting. It is important to remember that this is not a sequel but a bite-sized addition to the Alan Wake saga.

Gameplay: A more action-oriented approach than the original game.

Graphics: Good, but the wide-open areas make it less creepy.

Sound: Overall good, but some of the voice acting could have been better

Ultima 7: The Black Gate

Ultima 7: The Black Gate

This might just be one of the best Role Playing experiences ever created by Origin Systems. A huge world to explore and interact with and hundreds of characters to talk to. The scope of this quest is vast and this significantly raises the ante for future role playing games.

Gameplay: A vast world to explore with tons of things to see and do.

Graphics: A big step up from Ultima 6.

Sound: Not bad considering how long you will spend listening to the tunes

DuckTales: Remastered

DuckTales: Remastered

Wayforward definitely handled this remastered version with the respect that it deserves. The updated visuals look fantastic and the audio sounds great. It was also very nostalgic to hear the original voice actor for Scrooge reprising his role after all these years. If you loved the original you will have a blast with this one, but newcomers might wonder what all the fuss is about.

Gameplay: Very true to the original.

Graphics: The new character sprites are awesome, but I would have liked 2D backgrounds as well.

Sound: Nice renditions of the classic tunes

Castlevania: Legacy Of Darkness

Castlevania: Legacy Of Darkness

While the game is entertaining and offers value for money, I’m still not sold on the third dimension. It just adds annoying problems and the drab color palette doesn’t help either. Still, there is plenty of content with four playable characters, although the game feels more like an upgrade than a sequel to the original Castlevania 64.

Gameplay: Lots of platform jumping & some minor puzzle solving.

Graphics: Not too bad but definately needed more color.

Sound: Again not too bad but certainly not the best in the series

The Path

The Path

The Path is the very definition of a game that people either love to bits or completely hate. Since many players simple miss the point, or end up disappointed because the experience doesn’t conform to what they expect from a game, its hard to recommend The Path to the average gamer. However, if you can handle something new and unique, The Path will blow your mind.

Gameplay: Not your typical kind of game, but don’t let this deter you from a unique playing experience.

Graphics: The graphics have an intentional Playstation 2 style to them.

Sound: Catchy, creepy and memorable in equal measures

Super Comboman

Super Comboman

Super Comboman contains some great ideas, but is let down by less than stellar gameplay. Games such as Guacamelee! and Aces Wild have already demonstrated how great titles in the platform brawling genre can be, but Super Comboman doesn’t quite live up to expectations. The controls are the biggest source of frustration and the steep difficulty curve also feels more like a punishment than a challenge.

Gameplay: Lots of potential, but let down by frustrating controls and a steep difficulty curve.
Graphics: The sticker style visuals is an interesting and unique choice.
Sound: Not bad, but a little repetitive

The Nightmare Cooperative

The Nightmare Cooperative

A sixteen level rogue-like with small, screen sized levels might not sound like much, but The Nightmare Cooperative might just surprise you. There is a large selection of characters and controlling them all at the same time is certainly a unique, not to mention challenging experience. Learning how to play the game is a breeze, but truly mastering it will keep you busy for quite some time.

Gameplay: Simple to play, but requires more strategy than you might think.

Graphics: The vector art style is very distinctive.

Sound: The tunes are not exactly catchy, but very fitting
