Bookworm Adventures Deluxe
Popcap is one of those developers that could probably produce a quality casual game with their eyes closed so when they spend more than two years and close to a million dollars on a game you know it is something special. Bookworm Adventures is a sequel to the original Bookworm but comes packing a lengthy story mode, role playing elements such as levelling up, experience points and potions as well as some new gameplay innovations.
The story mode follows the adventures of our limbless hero, Lex the worm as he attempts to save Cassandra the Oracle. Lexis transported into books to fight fiendish monsters and prove once and for all that the pen is mightier than the sword. There are literally hundreds of unique monsters to battle and their designs are drawn from Greek mythology, the Arabian Nights tales as well as Dracula and his gothic cohorts. Along the way you will battle boss monsters, use potions to heal health and status effects, unlock treasures to aid you in battle and try your hand at various mini-games. The whole game is packed with a lot of humor and the typical Popcap polish. The gameplay is very simple and anyone that has played Scrabble will instantly know what to do. You are given a four by four grid of letters from which to form the longest possible word. Sixteen letters gives you a lot of scope to form some pretty impressive words and best of all, the letters do not need to be adjacent. The longer the word you create is, the more powerful your attack will be and you can incorporate gem tiles into the words for even bigger damage. The battles are turn based so after you have bashed an enemy they will retaliate. Things start out very easy but later levels are challenging to say the least. There are no time limits which is a blessing as it gives you a chance to come up with some pretty good words. Your enjoyment of the game is obviously going to depend largely on the depth of your vocabulary but this is a game that will appeal to anyone with a love for words. The gameplay is very addictive and because it is so simple, it is hard to resist playing just "one more" battle. You can only take a limited amount of treasures into battle with you so there is some strategic depth as well. Enemies can stun, freeze, poison and burn you as well as lock or corrupt your tiles so it is extremely important to take them out as quickly as possible. There are few things more satisfying than annihilating a foe with "Carbohydrate" or "Lodestone." Enemies are well animated and the game features some suitable audio as well. If you are no good at word games then Bookworm Adventures is probably not going to be as much fun as it is to someone that dominates at Scrabble. The polished presentation and cartoon visuals might draw you in and overall this is a title that the whole family can enjoy while actually improving their vocabulary as well.
