FISH.OS Turns a Fake 1997 Desktop Into an Idle Fishing Game

Solo developer ORCO Games has revealed FISH.OS, an idle fishing game that replaces the traditional main menu with a fake operating system straight out of 1997. Instead of navigating ordinary game screens, players boot into a desktop where fishing, trading, aquariums and fleet management all run as separate windows.

The unusual concept began life on Roblox, where it accumulated 1.9 million plays and a 97 percent approval rating. ORCO Games is now rebuilding it natively for Steam, with a full PC release planned for November 2026. The new version recently took first place at the Big Indie Pitch during SLICE 2026 in Seattle.

At the centre of FISH.OS is a familiar idle-game loop. Players catch fish, sell them through a market whose prices change every 30 seconds, improve their equipment and purchase boats that continue working while the game is closed. When progress begins to slow, formatting the virtual drive resets the installation in exchange for a permanent multiplier.

The desktop presentation is more than a visual gimmick. Every major system opens in its own movable window, allowing players to arrange the fishing application, market and aquarium however they prefer. A compact mode can also dock the game above the Windows taskbar, leaving the water, boats and catch indicator visible while other work continues on the computer.

There are 250 pixel-art species to discover across several fishing zones. Each catch is added to the Fishpedia with information about its rarity and habitat, while duplicate fish can be fused into unusual hybrids. Favourite catches can be displayed in a customisable aquarium, where equipped fish provide bonuses to the wider progression loop.

FISH.OS also takes its pretend operating system surprisingly seriously. The desktop includes Solitaire, Fish 2048, a layered paint program, a music player and FishSweeper, a Minesweeper-style diversion where the mines have been replaced by sea urchins. Desktop themes, a screensaver and an apparently important seagull complete the deliberately unnecessary software bundle.

ORCO Games says FISH.OS will be sold as a single purchase without advertisements, microtransactions, energy systems or an in-game store. Its soundtrack features several real bands from the West Coast, while the game can be played offline and requires no internet connection after installation.

A public Steam demo is expected shortly, while access to the temporarily closed playtest is also due to reopen. FISH.OS is scheduled to launch for Windows in November 2026. Players interested in turning their second monitor into an aquarium, fishing spot and late-1990s desktop can wishlist it on Steam now.
