Heileen
Heileen is a young, 17th century girl who is about to embark on a voyage to the new world with her uncle who is a merchant. She is joined by her childhood friend, Marie who is there to keep her company during the long trip. Having lived quite a sheltered live back in England, this trip will be a life changing experience for Heileen.
Heileen is a visual novel which is basically like a interactive story book. The plot progresses in a mostly linear fashion but occasionally you are prompted to make a choice. These choices then influence how the story plays out and which one of the three endings you receive. It is impossible to make "incorrect" choices but there are a few sub-quests that can only be solved by selecting certain responses. While the game has an interesting premise and playing from a female perspective is rather unique, the whole experience is not without its flaws. Firstly, I was able to complete the game in less than an hour which, considering the price tag is not really value for money. I did replay it twice for the other endings but thanks to the text skip option this was over and done within a matter of minutes. The melodramatic plot wit is sexual innuendo filled conversations is also not going to be everyone's cup of tea. I really disliked the fact that despite ignoring one of the male romance options and even throwing him under the bus a few times to save her own skin, Heileen still ended up professing her undying love for this womanizer. In fact, the only way not to end up with him is by ending up with one of two other women. The manga style artwork is nice but there are unfortunately no animations. Characters change outfits, poses and expressions occasionally but that's about it. There is only a small smattering of music at the start of each chapter while the rest is complete silence apart from the occasional sound effect snippet. I also noticed a few grammatical errors in the script that was overlooked. While the game was engaging enough for me to complete it multiple times I must admit that it feels a bit overpriced for what is on offer. Hopefully the sequel takes care of all my complaints. Be sure to check out the demo of this game first before committing to a purchase.
