Kalanoro Launches a Musical Rebellion Inspired by Malagasy Folklore

Madagascar-based Red Raketa Studio has released Kalanoro, a colourful action-adventure platformer that sends an unlikely hero on a musical rebellion through the folklore-inspired world of Lemuria.

The studio’s debut game is available now for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, published by New Tales. It follows Kalakely, a Kalanoro drawn from Malagasy folklore, as she attempts to loosen the witch Raneny’s grip on the island. Her plan is not to raise an army, but to assemble a band of lemur musicians, grow a fanbase and crash Raneny’s enormous concert.

That wonderfully odd premise gives Kalanoro a distinctive identity. The adventure combines 3D platforming and fast-paced combat with light management elements centred on the band’s tour bus. Players will travel across Lemuria, rescue musicians and take on Raneny’s forces while gradually building enough popularity to perform at larger venues.

Kalakely is armed with more than musical ambition. Her magical hair can be used to attack enemies, grapple across gaps and navigate environmental hazards. Improvised weapons add to the playful tone, with frying pans, slippers, road signs and hammers all available when a more direct approach is required.

The rescued musicians are more than collectibles. They join Kalakely aboard a travelling taxi-brousse that serves as the band’s mobile home base. Keeping the group together means paying attention to each member’s mood through cooking, activities and minigames. Neglected bandmates may leave, or even find themselves captured again, adding a small management layer between the platforming and combat sequences.

Music naturally plays a major role throughout the journey. The soundtrack features contributions from Malagasy artists Denise, Jyeuhair and Marco Klarck, helping the fictional island of Lemuria reflect the culture and creative energy that inspired it. Red Raketa Studio was founded in Madagascar in 2021, making the release a notable debut for a team bringing its own folklore and perspective to an international audience.

Kalanoro is now available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Those curious about its blend of acrobatic action, band management and lemur-powered rebellion can watch the launch trailer below.
