Kernel Hearts Brings Four-Player Magical-Girl Roguelike Action to PC and Consoles September 17
Kernel Hearts, the four-player action roguelike from Argentinian developer Ephemera Games, will launch on September 17, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
Its world is already on the edge of extinction when the members of M.A.H.O.U Unit receive a suitably modest assignment: climb the Tower of Babel, eliminate the angels guarding its floors and destroy a god. The unit consists of four super-powered android magical girls, each heading into the tower as humanity’s remaining hope.
That dramatic setup feeds into a run-based action RPG that can be played alone or in online co-op with up to three friends. Attacks, spells and movement abilities can be combined into increasingly elaborate combos, while every floor introduces new enemies and ends with a guardian battle.
Staying in one area for too long carries its own risk. The tower’s curse gradually attracts more dangerous opposition, encouraging squads to keep moving. Players can also channel the tower’s energy to temporarily assume a more powerful magical form and unleash a punishing attack on nearby enemies.
Defeat sends M.A.H.O.U Unit back to a memory backup in its laboratory, but progress is not entirely lost. Rewards collected during previous expeditions can be spent on skill chips, with up to 256KB available when configuring a unit’s persistent build. It is a deliberately tiny-sounding storage allowance for what promises to be a fairly flexible progression system.
The journey is not limited to combat. Each celestial domain contains characters who can assist the squad, and players will be able to strengthen those relationships through conversations and gifts. Some of those bonds may eventually develop into romance.
Kernel Hearts has also found an unusually visible route into the public eye through Fortnite. Fernet, one of its four protagonists, was introduced as a Fortnite outfit in August. Purchasing Kernel Hearts through the Epic Games Store with the same Epic account grants the Fernet outfit, and publisher Whitethorn Games says the offer will remain available after launch.
According to the publisher, that crossover helped place Kernel Hearts near the top of the Epic Games Store’s Top Sellers list for almost two weeks. It is an impressive amount of attention for Ephemera’s first release, although the more important test begins when players are finally able to tackle the complete tower.
A free demo is currently available through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The full game will contain around seven floors, compared with the demo’s two, and its latest demo update added Japanese voice acting alongside combat, economy, interface and performance improvements.
Kernel Hearts launches on September 17, 2026 for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. More information is available from the game’s official website.
