Kikokugai: The Cyber SlayerKong Taoluo is a master assassin for a Chinese syndicate but after he is betrayed and left for dead by his former comrades his number one priority becomes revenge. Not only for what was done to him but also the murder of his sister who suffered a fate worse than death at the hands of her tormentors. The odds are against Kong as he is a neijia practitioner who trained his whole life to build his inner strength while his opponents are all waijia practitioners who rely on outer strength and is enhanced by cybernetic parts. Kong has one trick up his sleeve though, the ability to kill cyborgs with a single attack.
The story is penned by Gen Urobuchi so as expected there are some very dark elements and nothing is as clear cut as it first seems. The backdrop is a futuristic China where Kong stalks his opponents in the city of Shanghai. It is a very linear story with no choices and only one ending but the descriptive fight scenes and interesting characters had me hooked right to the end. Kong has no augmentations and has to rely on his training and techniques to take down his opponents making for some very nail biting fight scenes. Sadly there are no animations so you will have to use your imagination and the few still images that are shown to fully experience the action. The cast of characters are not that big but most of them are a bit deeper than your typical visual novel fare. The story is very short however so don't expect too much deviation from the task at hand. There are a few hentei scenes but these are censored and not that frequent. To be honest these scenes could have been removed without impacting the story too much but I guess they were included for some shock value. As I mentioned there are some rather disturbing elements to the plot but since the story is so short you will just have to find out for yourself what these are as I don't want to spoil anything. The visuals are nice with some decent character designs but the lack of animation is disappointing considering the action packed fight scenes. There is no voice acting either although the music and sound effects are rather good. Since there are no choices to make you are basically left reading the story and clicking through the lines of text until you reach the conclusion. This is not going to appeal to everyone but those who enjoy a good martial arts story featuring a hero prevailing against insurmountable odds will like what is on offer. If you are looking for a short but action packed kinetic novel then this one fits the bill. It has some rather unexpected twists and a few rather unsavory story elements but this shouldn't deter you from sticking with it to the end. |
