Last Wail of the Sea King Demo Opens a Surreal RPG Inside a Dying Leviathan
Last Wail of the Sea King has released a free PC demo, offering a first look at the surreal party-based RPG set entirely inside the body of a dying ocean leviathan.
The demo arrived on Steam on September 16 alongside the game’s participation in Steam’s Party-Based RPG Fest. It introduces the unusual world growing inside the Sea King, its first-person exploration and its turn-based party combat ahead of the full game’s planned 2027 release.
Developed by Belgian indie studio Funke Munke, Last Wail of the Sea King casts players as Clyde the Intern. His assignment takes him into a gigantic sea creature whose body has become home to settlements, mutated wildlife and eccentric inhabitants.
Years of ocean pollution have transformed the leviathan’s interior into a distorted ecosystem. Its fleshy landscapes include trash-filled communities, pools of stomach acid and stranger areas hidden deeper within the creature.
The Sea King is also slowly dying. Exploring its body is therefore more than an excuse for an unusual setting: players will be moving through a world deteriorating around its inhabitants while attempting to discover what is happening to the creature.
Characters are presented as flat, collage-like figures placed inside fully three-dimensional environments. The contrast gives conversations and exploration the appearance of moving through a strange pop-up book, albeit one constructed from organs, waste and mutated sea life.
Some of the creatures encountered inside can be recruited. Party composition is influenced by choices made while exploring and speaking to characters, with prospective companions bringing different abilities into combat.
Battles use a turn-based party system inspired by classic role-playing games. Players can equip their group with weapons and gear discovered while exploring, then experiment with different characters and abilities against tribal warriors, altered fish and other organisms living inside the leviathan.
That familiar structure gives the game a useful anchor. Recruiting allies, improving equipment and choosing actions in turn-based battles should be immediately understandable, even when everything surrounding those systems is deliberately strange.
The newly released demo is intended to show how those elements fit together. It includes an initial portion of the Sea King’s interior, its inhabitants and the combat system, although Funke Munke has not specified how much of the finished adventure it contains.
The environmental theme appears likely to be more than background decoration. Pollution has directly reshaped the world and its residents, while the creature’s failing health creates a larger problem that cannot necessarily be solved by simply winning another battle.
Funke Munke describes itself as a small studio interested in artistic experimentation and unconventional storytelling. Last Wail of the Sea King is being developed with support from Flanders Game Hub, an organisation established to assist the Flemish games industry.
The project does not currently have a precise release date beyond 2027. Its Steam page lists Windows as the supported platform, with no console versions announced at the time of writing.
Last Wail of the Sea King is scheduled to launch for PC in 2027. Its free demo is available now through the game’s Steam page, while additional information is available from the official Funke Munke website.
