Mahjong Quest 2
It has been a few years since Kwazi restored balance to a world ravaged by dragons. Now a teenager, Kwazi is split in two by nature and once again must save the world from a state of imbalance. This is done the usual way, by cleaning boards of mahjong tiles. Kwazi's quest for balance will take him/her through eight mystical lands with eight levels each. The goal is simply to match the gold Yin/Yang tiles buried beneath the other tiles.
I quite enjoyed the original Mahjong Quest and wasted quite a few hours on it. Mahjong Quest 2 is basically more of the same but there are a few new twists and tweaks. The story isn't anything special and sees the two Kwazis (a white clad male and black clad female) move from level to level, matching tiles. At the end of each land there is a tiny animation of them passing through a gate to get to the next land but that's about it. You also have a fortune cookie dispensing wisdom on the map screen between levels. Apart from the lengthy story mode, there is also something like 500 new puzzles to try out so value for money is not an issue. My favorite new addition is the Tournament Mode that pits you against other players online. Matchmaking is done automatically which might be an issue for the people who want to play against friends but I never had any issues finding opponents. The gameplay is as addictive as ever and matching tile pairs or triplets kept me up long into the night. Aside from the usual assortment of tiles and power-ups that will be familiar to fans of the series there are some new twists as well. Some tile towers now rest upon balloons which means you have to clear all the tiles on top to free the balloons and see the tiles below them. Then there are levels with a tiny monster stomping between gongs below the playing area. Each time it strikes a gong the tile placement swaps. The only way to prevent this is to make a match which causes the monster to turn around and march towards the other gong. While these additions do not significantly after the way that the game is played it does provide some nice variation. The visuals are undemanding which means the game is playable on just about any computer. The sound effects are also pretty minimal but the soothing music fits the mood of the game perfectly. The mouse control is responsive and the ability to switch the viewing angle of the tiles means nothing is ever hidden out of sight. Mahjong Quest 2 is a great casual title that is sure to please fans of the original. It might just be more of the same but that is hardly a problem when the base game is so addictive.
