Muramasa: Revenant Blades Launches February 4, 2027 With New Gameplay Showcase

Vanillaware’s cult action RPG is sharpening its blades for a return next year. Marvelous has confirmed that Muramasa: Revenant Blades will launch on February 4, 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, alongside a new extended gameplay showcase offering almost ten minutes of combat and exploration.

Rather than a straightforward port, Revenant Blades brings together the content of Muramasa: Rebirth and its Genroku Legends add-on for the first time. That means Momohime and Kisuke are joined by Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru and Rajaki, with all six protagonists and their individual stories available from the beginning and playable in any order.

The original Muramasa: The Demon Blade arrived on Wii in 2009 before an expanded version, Muramasa: Rebirth, followed on PlayStation Vita in 2013. More than a decade later, the revival is getting considerably more than a resolution bump. Marvelous says the presentation has been upgraded for modern hardware with support for up to 4K resolution, while the localisation has been redone and now includes English voice acting.

Combat is also being refined with updated controls, new combat and weapon systems and more than 100 swords to forge. Each of the six protagonists has a distinct fighting style, ranging from traditional Demon Blade swordplay to ninja tools and, because this is still very much a Vanillaware game, the ability to summon a horde of cats. Dozens of skills can be upgraded and customised as players make their way through a supernatural vision of Japan’s Genroku period.

The story revolves around powerful swords forged by the legendary Senji Muramasa. Their owners gain tremendous power at the cost of a bloodthirsty madness, and the conflict surrounding the blades attracts demons and other malevolent spirits. The six intertwined stories follow characters caught up in the resulting chaos as each attempts to wrest back control of their fate.

Marvelous is also adding variable gameplay styles and new modes, while the new showcase gives a much clearer look at how Vanillaware’s hand-drawn environments and animation have survived the transition to modern displays. It is difficult to think of many games from the Wii era whose artwork was better suited to being preserved rather than reinvented, so the decision to enhance the original visual style instead of replacing it seems particularly appropriate here.

Physical standard editions for PS5, Switch and Switch 2 are planned at £44.99 / €49.99, while a £59.99 / €69.99 Deluxe Edition will include the game and a collectible art book. Details and pricing for the digital console and PC editions have not yet been announced.
