Prison Architect Creators Reveal Arise Dark Lord, an Action-Strategy RTS You Can Play Now

Prison Architect developer Introversion Software has revealed Arise Dark Lord, an action-strategy hybrid that lets players build an evil stronghold, raise an undead army and personally lead the assault against humanity.

The game combines real-time strategy, tower defence and base building with direct control of the Dark Lord. Rather than watching the battle entirely from above, players can move the villainous protagonist using a keyboard and mouse or controller, casting spells and fighting alongside the creatures summoned to serve them.

Every defeated enemy provides Mana that can be channelled into the Dark Lord’s sorcery. Orc armies can be called up from the underworld, fallen humans can be raised as zombies and increasingly destructive spells can be used against settlements, fortresses and anything else standing between the player and complete domination.

Conquest is only half of the problem. The human kingdoms will eventually respond by sending forces to destroy the Dark Tower, forcing players to fortify their territory before marching too far from home. Turrets, siege weapons, barricades and cursed traps can be positioned around the stronghold, while nearby forests and mountains can be corrupted and stripped of resources needed to equip the growing army.

Destroying human cities and fortresses awards Insight for upgrading the spell book. Introversion says the escalating campaign will see the rest of the world increasingly unite against the Dark Lord as the player’s powers and territory expand.

Although Arise Dark Lord is still in early development, players do not have to rely solely on the announcement trailer to judge the idea. A free browser-based prototype is already playable through itch.io, giving players an early look at the direct-control combat, army building and defensive systems.

The prototype is presented under the Subversion Studios name, while the commercial release is developed and published by Introversion Software. The studio is best known for Prison Architect, but its catalogue also includes DEFCON, Darwinia, Uplink and The Last Starship.

Introversion currently expects Arise Dark Lord to launch for PC sometime in 2027. No firm release date has been announced, but the game can already be wishlisted on Steam.
