Spaceborn: Awakening Makes Its Sci-Fi Story the Heart of Bullet-Heaven Progression
Spaceborn: Awakening has received a new gameplay trailer showcasing how its science-fiction story campaign feeds directly into an escalating bullet-heaven power fantasy.
The upcoming PC roguelite is being developed by ProtoGames and is currently scheduled to launch in November 2026. A free Steam demo is already available.
Players begin as an ordinary crew member responding to a transmission from a space station that fell silent decades earlier. The station may be beyond the last mapped system, but the player’s crew is both the closest and apparently the only one available to investigate.
That unfortunate assignment places them in the path of the Voss Praetor and its corrupted swarm. Initially vulnerable, the chosen crew member gradually gains control of cosmic abilities powerful enough to clear entire screens.
The central hook is that the campaign itself acts as the game’s progression system.
Completing story chapters unlocks each class’s full Awakening, adding abilities and expanding how it can be played. Those permanent developments then carry into subsequent runs, tying the protagonist’s transformation from mortal crew member to cosmic champion directly to the unfolding narrative.
According to lead developer Stathis Aposporis, the intention was to build the roguelite loop around the story rather than attach a separate plot to an already completed structure. Becoming the first Spaceborn is therefore both the narrative arc and the mechanical progression.
Runs still contain the familiar pressure of the bullet-heaven genre. Enemies close in from every direction while players reposition, kite the swarm and assemble increasingly destructive combinations before they are overwhelmed.
Weapons and prototype technology can evolve during play. Characters may also embrace the universe’s mystical side, gaining cosmic powers that eventually allow a single command to wipe out much of the battlefield.
The newly released footage emphasises this increase in scale. Early attacks are comparatively restrained, but later encounters fill the screen with projectiles, energy effects and large groups of corrupted enemies.
Story Mode is not the only place to use the completed arsenal. Unlocks earned through the campaign can be taken into dedicated Survival and Endless modes, where players can push their builds beyond the limits of a normal chapter.
The setting revolves around a cosmic power attempting to preserve balance. When that balance shifts too far, opposing champions emerge as Spaceborn and Voidborn and continue their conflict until equilibrium is restored.
Awakening serves as a prequel to that wider timeline. Its campaign covers the first conflict, when the cosmic power is still relatively raw and the destructive abilities available to both sides have not yet been constrained.
Players fight as a champion aligned against the Void, despite drawing upon powers related to those used by the opposition. The story explores awakening, corruption, legacy and sacrifice, although ProtoGames says its dramatic stakes will be balanced by a lighter and more colourful tone.
The project is the first game from ProtoGames, a largely solo studio led by Aposporis. He has spent approximately 12 years working across AAA and independent development, while several longtime colleagues are contributing art and music to the game.
It is also intended as the first part of a larger Spaceborn intellectual property. The developer describes Awakening as a starting point for a universe that could eventually extend across multiple genres.
That ambition makes the integration between story and repeated runs particularly important. Rather than asking players to stop the action for disconnected exposition, each completed chapter changes what becomes possible during later attempts.
The exact amount of content planned for the full campaign has not yet been detailed. ProtoGames has also not announced a price or a specific November release day.
Players can, however, try the current demo to assess its movement, weapon evolution and horde combat before launch. The Steam listing currently supports Windows, macOS and Linux, although its published hardware requirements remain preliminary.
