If you enjoy stylish visuals, fast-paced combat, and over-the-top violence, then The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile will definitely put a grin on your face. It features two different characters, a nice carnage-filled campaign, as well as plenty of extra modes to keep you hacking and slashing. Despite its age (the game was initially released on Xbox 360 back in 2011), Vampire Smile still has what it takes to satisfy fans of the genre.

Gameplay: The game is fast, fluid, and very, very violent.

Graphics: The visuals are stylish, but the art style might not appeal to everyone.

Sound: The soundtrack and sound effects are a perfect match for the action

Zombo Buster Rising

Zombo Buster Rising is a mindless 2D arcade game where you fend off waves of zombies that are storming your base. Killing zombies rewards you with cash that can be used for upgrades and you are eventually joined by two AI controlled partners. The game is very simple and instead of moving around, you only control the cross-hairs. There is some strategy involved when it comes to activating special abilities at the right time, but overall this is a game that can be completed quickly and easily. It usually sells for dirt cheap, though, so fans of the genre should definitely give it a shot.

Gameplay: Shoot zombies before they overrun your base while collecting coins to upgrade your weapon.

Graphics: 2D, very basic and featuring only one background, but at least there are plenty of zombie types.

Sound: Nothing memorable about the music or sound effects, but thankfully neither is annoying

The Wardrobe

The Wardrobe isn’t the easiest of point & click adventures, but it is very entertaining and clearly made by people who love the genre. As Skinny the skeleton, you must navigate a neighborhood filled with crazy characters in an effort to save your friend’s soul from eternal damnation. The game sports some some beautifully detailed visuals and every scene is filled with references and homages to pop culture. If you fondly remember titles such as Day of The Tentacle, Sam & Max, and Discworld, then The Wardrobe should not be missed.

Gameplay: Feels like a classic point & click adventure, complete with the high difficulty of the puzzles.

Graphics: Beautiful and detailed visuals that are hand illustrated and digitally colored.

Sounds: Nice tunes and decent voice acting

The Purring Quest

The Purring Quest has a few flaws, including a rather limited number of levels, but it is hard not to be charmed by the delightful protagonist and moving story. The hand-drawn visuals and animations definitely stand out, but the game is genuinely fun as well. It might not feature many innovations in terms of gameplay or puzzles, but there is no doubt that it was a labor of love for the creators and something all cat fans will enjoy.

Gameplay: The controls are a little stiff, but this doesn’t detract too much from the fun.

Graphics: The game features beautiful hand-drawn visuals and some stellar animations.

Sound: The orchestral soundtrack is quite epic

The Order of the Thorne – The King’s Challenge

The Order of the Thorne – The King’s Challenge offers a witty, entertaining and family friendly point and click adventure experience. The retro style visuals take a while to get used to, especially on larger monitors, but definitely captures the charm of the classics of the genre. As far as point and click adventures goes this one is rather straightforward, but definitely a lot of fun and well worth adding to your collection.

Gameplay: The story and puzzles are relatively straightforward, but still very entertaining.

Graphics: Looks like it was lifted straight from a nineties Sierra title.

Sound: Great voice acting for all the characters and a nice orchestral soundtrack

Guilty Gear might not be able to win over the hardcore Street Fighter fans or the 3D Beat ‘Em Up aficionados but it is something different and unique. Fights are fast and can be won in the blink of an eye which might catch some players off guard. If you can put up with the punishing difficulty or have many friends to play against then this game is well worth digging up.

Gameplay: Fast and unforgiving. Not very noob friendly but veterans will enjoy the challenge.

Graphics: Proves that the PSone can handle good 2D visuals.

Sound: Depends on how much you like metal

Arcana Heart 3 LOVE MAX!!!!!

Arcana Heart 3 LOVE MAX!!!!! has a lot to offer fans of the genre with its large roster of unique characters, interesting Arcanas and fast paced fighting. The character designs are great and it is only the pixalated sprites that let down the visuals somewhat. The fighting offers a lot of depth, but even novices can have fun by switching to Simple mode. For a great 2D fighter that is unlike anything else available on PC give Arcana Heart 3 LOVE MAX!!!!! a shot.

Gameplay: Fast, frantic and once you have mastered the moves, a lot of fun.

Graphics: Sprite are a little low-res and the 4:3 resolution makes things feel a bit cramped, but overall quite good.

Sound: Full Japanese voice acting and some nice albeit unremarkable background music

It is a pleasant surprise to see the Guilty Gear series appear on PC and with the right setup this game is a blast to play. Gameplay is solid although the last boss is one of the cheapest I’ve seen in a while. The lack of a story mode is also a downside but if you like your fighting games deep and don’t mind getting your ass kicked then this is the game for you. 2D fighting games doesn’t get much better than this on PC.

Gameplay: More accessible than the last game but also has a lot of depth if you stick with it.

Graphics: It would have been nice if the resolution could be increased but the game still looks good.

Sound: Good music but muddy sound effects

Guilty Gear X Advance Edition

I must admit that I had more fun that I expected with this port of the game. The visuals and sound let it down but the gameplay remains solid. It is a lot easier than the other versions which is bad if you are experienced with the game and good if you have struggled to get anywhere with the other games. Nevertheless fighting games on the go don’t get much better than this on GBA.

Gameplay: This actually comes close to the bigger versions except for the vastly reduced difficulty.

Graphics: Tiny characters and bland backgrounds but at least everything is recognizable.

Sound: As bad as you would expect from the Gameboy Advance
