Lone Fungus by BastiGames

Lone Fungus by BastiGames

With all the great 2D indie platformer titles on the market, it’s hard to believe that the genre almost died out with the advent of 3D graphics on consoles. It has also been great to see how different developers have been putting their own spin on the genre. For example, Lone Fungus is a “Mushroom Metroidvania” that is currently in need of backing over on Kickstarter. According to the developer, Basti, Lone Fungus was inspired by new and old classics like Hollow Knight, Super Metroid, Super Castlevania IV, and Megaman X, which was enough to get our attention

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition

Ori and the Blind Forest immediately catches the eye with its hand-painted visual style, but beneath all the visual gloss beats the fiendish heart of a platformer. Exploring the vibrant game world is a joy, but the occasional spike in difficulty can also cause some frustration. The game’s Definitive Edition comes with plenty of enhancements and improvements that make an already great game even better. If you are a fan of the genre and up for the challenge, then you won’t be disappointed with Ori and the Blind Forest.

Gameplay: The game doesn’t veer too far off from what is standard for the genre, but it is a lot of fun to play.

Graphics: The art style of Ori and the Blind Forest is downright beautiful.

Sound: The game features a very fitting orchestral soundtrack

CARRION

CARRION

CARRION is a great, although brief game that gives players the chance to go wild in a research facility as a flesh-eating tentacle monster. The game is extremely bloody, but between all the mayhem there are also plenty of puzzles to solve. Your creature can unlock a ton of new abilities, which opens up new areas to explore, but the lack of a map could frustrate some players. Despite some repetition and a few small niggles we thoroughly enjoyed our time with CARRION and the game comes highly recommended.

Gameplay: Plays like a very violent Metroidvania, except without the platforming elements.

Graphics: The pixel art looks great and the animations are smooth, but more unique locations would have been a big plus.

Sound: Atmospheric music and great sound effects

The Last Faith by Kumi Souls

The Last Faith by Kumi Souls

As much as we loved Bloodstained; Ritual of the Night there was still a small part of us that wished the visuals retained the beautiful pixel art style of Symphony of the Night. It looks like we were not the only ones either as The Last Faith – a dark Gothic Metroidvania by Kumi Souls Games was 100% funded in just 2 days. The Last Faith will allow players to discover the secrets of a decadent world where an ancient religion is the law, but they will have to face horrific beasts to subvert a hidden prophecy

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is as close as one can get to the original Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. For some fans, this will be exactly what they wanted, but the game can also feel a little too familiar at times. However, it’s an entertaining title that is packed with content, and exploring the twists and turns of the castle is certainly an enjoyable experience. The game isn’t perfect, but delivers on its promises and definitely scratches that Castlevania itch.

Gameplay: Plays almost exactly like previous Igavania titles.

Graphics: Good overall, but some things feel very out of place.

Sound: The audio is good, but the music is not quite as memorable as SoTN
