The Walking Dead: Episode 02 - Starved For Help
Normally in games where I am given a choice, I tend to gravitate towards the "good" options. This is usually pretty easy as choices are generally binary. Making the "right" choice in The Walking Dead is not that easy however. Firstly because there usually is no "right" or "good" choice and secondly because whatever you choose, it is going to have repercussions further down the road.
After a stellar first episode, the second episode sees Lee and his not so merry band of survivors holed up at the motor in. It has been three months since the events of the first episode and tension is running pretty high. A new survivor, Mark, has joined the group thanks to his supply of food but this has since run out and tempers are starting to flare. The game delights in putting you into awkward situations such as having to decide who gets food and who gets to watch with an empty stomach. Since the story is the biggest draw of this series there isn't much that I can say without spoiling the surprises. The majority of the game takes place on a farm where you have to deal with strangers that offer food in exchange for gasoline to keep their electric fence running. There are also some bandits in the woods that have to be dealt with. While it might seem strange to have another farm as a major location so soon after the visit to Hershel's farm in episode one, it's actually not that bad. There are some pretty cool plot twists but anyone that has watched any horror movies in the past will probably sense what is going to happen pretty quickly. Once again the game doesn't pull any punches and not everyone is going to make it to episode three. There are some very tense situations but as far as actual puzzles go don't expect too much of a challenge. You will spend most of your time talking to the other survivors and making choices that may or may not come back to bite you in the butt further down the line. There are also a couple of quick time events thrown in the mix but even these are not very hard. Despite this the two hours that I spent with the game was tense, nail biting and gripping right down to the last second. The drama has certainly been ramped up a bit and you can expect plenty of confrontations before the credits roll. The game engine is obviously still the same but the cell shaded visuals still look great. While the graphics might look like those found in a comic book, the amount of gore means that this is no children's cartoon. The animation is not as meticulous as in some big budget titles but it gets the job done. The actual locations are still rather limited and you can't exactly explore at will but it does keep the story moving at a brisk pace. The voice acting is still very good as well and the audio very fitting. The Walking Dead: Episode 02 - Starved for Help keeps the tension and momentum generated by the first episode and once again had me looking forward to the next. The great characters and gripping storyline kept me hooked and while some of the events were predictable this did not hamper my overall enjoyment. The only bad thing is that the game is so good you will probably complete it in one sitting.
