The Wolf Among Us: Episode 04 - In Sheep's ClothingThe Wolf Among Us - In Sheep's Clothing is the fourth episode in a five episode series, so if you have not played the previous episodes now is the time to stop reading. I will try my best to avoid spoilers for this episode, but it is written with the assumption that players have already completed the previous three episodes.
Sheriff Bigby Wolf has taken a few beatings over the course of the previous episodes of The Wolf Among Us, but none more severe than what happened at the conclusion of A Crooked Mile. After an encounter with Bloody Mary, who lives up to her name by the way, Bigby was left barely clinging to life. Riddled with silver and sporting a severely broken arm, episode 04 sees Bigby getting patched up, in quite a gruesome manner I might add, before heading back out on the hunt. After everything Bigby has been through I'm not sure if he is on the hunt for justice or revenge anymore, but one thing is for sure you don't want to get on his bad side. Compared to the explosive conclusion of A Crooked Mile, the pace of this episode is quite sedate, but it does give players a bit of a breather before heading into the finale. With the villains revealed, Bigby has one goal and that is to track them down and get some answers as well as a bit of payback. In Sheep's Clothing introduces a few new locations like a pawn shop run by the Jersey Devil as well as a butcher shop run by The butcher. You know, the one usually associated with his friends the baker and the candlestick maker. We also get a chance to check out the humble abode of Beauty and the Beast as well as a brief trip to a location that I am sure we will see more of in the finale. Despite the more sedate pace this episode still felt meaningful and the one action scene is amongst my favorite thus far. The choices you have to make might not seem as important as some of the ones featured in previous episodes, but there are still a few that had me waiting until the timer almost ran down before I made my selection. Bigby even has the option to send certain fables to the farm in this episode which is pretty hectic stuff. I was also surprised to see that there were more chances for Bigby to show his softer side and actually try to help certain characters instead of getting his claws out. It is also the shortest episode so far, barely making it to the 90 minute mark and there aren't many scenes with consequential environmental interaction. In fact, I think Bigby adds one new item to his inventory for this entire episode, so don't expect much in the way of puzzle solving. You do get the choice between two locations at one point, but once again it didn't have the sense of urgency that such a choice had in a previous episode. From a technical standpoint, I didn't encounter any problems with this episode and the visuals, apart from a bit of clipping here and there during animations, are as great as always. It was nice to see a bit more of Fabletown in this episode and the new locations are pretty cool. At this point there isn't much left to say about the voice acting in the game apart from the fact that Telltale Games have some of the best in the business. Not only is the writing superb, but the actors deliver each line with the type of confidence and conviction that make you care about their characters. It does feel like Telltale Games is saving a lot for the final episode, but In Sheep's Clothing never feels like it is just filler. There is a definite feeling that the episode is building up to something big, and while the final moments lack the shock factor of A Crooked Mile you will still be left on the edge of your seat. Fortunately, the waiting time between episodes have been getting mercifully shorter, which means we won't have too long to wait to see how things pan out. As this game serves as a prequel for the comic books there are obviously a couple of things that cannot happen, but I am still expecting big things for the concluding episode.
