Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure Now Available on PS5 and Switch 2
Two of the most important entries in Nihon Falcom’s long-running Trails series have made the jump to current-generation consoles. The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero and The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure are now available on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, bringing the complete Crossbell arc to both systems with a handful of technical upgrades.
Both games follow Lloyd Bannings and the Special Support Section in the city-state of Crossbell, beginning with Trails from Zero and continuing directly into Trails to Azure. If you’ve somehow managed to keep up with the wider Trails timeline without visiting Crossbell yet, this is probably about as convenient a point of entry as you’re going to get without a conspiracy board and several metres of red string.
The new PS5 and Switch 2 versions support resolutions up to 4K and frame rates up to 120 FPS on compatible displays. Players can also switch between the original textures and newer upscaled versions, while the Nintendo Switch 2 releases add mouse input support. High-Speed Mode returns as well, which is useful given that both games are very much in the ‘settle in for a while’ school of JRPG design.
Trails from Zero introduces Lloyd as he returns home to Crossbell and joins the city’s newly formed Special Support Section alongside Elie MacDowell, Randy Orlando and Tio Plato. What begins with odd jobs and minor requests gradually exposes the corruption beneath Crossbell’s prosperous surface. Trails to Azure picks up a few months later, with the city caught between growing internal threats and pressure from the Erebonian Empire and Republic of Calvard. Save data from Trails from Zero can also be carried into Trails to Azure for additional conversations and alternate dialogue.
The two games can be purchased separately through digital storefronts, while the physical PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 release bundles both games together. NIS America is also offering a Limited Edition containing the physical collection, Crossbell’s Collected Works art book, a soundtrack selection, holographic cards, an acrylic stand, S.S.S. insignias and a Mishelam Wonderland coaster set. The Nintendo Switch 2 physical release uses a Game-Key Card.
The Crossbell games were already available on PC, PlayStation 4 and the original Nintendo Switch, so these new releases are primarily aimed at anyone wanting the duology on newer hardware. The PC and original Switch versions have also received updates adding some of the visual options introduced for the new ports.
