Villion:Code Heads West in 2027 for PC, PlayStation and Switch
Compile Heart’s school-set action RPG Villion:Code is heading west in 2027, with Idea Factory International confirming releases for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement comes a few months after the game made its Japanese debut on June 25, 2026.
The project is particularly notable for the people behind it. Villion:Code is produced by Kouji “Cozy” Okada, whose career stretches back to the formative years of Megami Tensei, and reunites him with scenario writer Tadashi Satomi and composer Tsukasa Masuko. Character artwork comes from illustrator Ilya Kuvshinov. It’s the sort of creative line-up that should make longtime Japanese RPG fans raise an eyebrow even before anyone starts talking about genome-powered weapons.
Villion:Code takes place in the near future, where humanity is edging towards extinction and the Adhvan Resilience School has been established to prepare for an approaching calamity. Things go predictably poorly when creatures known as GEMs begin attacking and the academy city becomes sealed inside a mysterious bubble, cutting off every means of escape. The students trapped inside are left trying to uncover what caused the anomaly while dealing with the consequences of their own actions.
Exploration takes players into Sankhara Space-Time, randomly generated tube-shaped dungeons that can be traversed across their full 360-degree surfaces. Routes, enemies and item placements change between runs, while traps and other environmental gimmicks make understanding the shape of each space part of getting through it.
Combat takes place in real time and revolves around Genome Arms, mutated weapons with different attack properties. Characters can switch between melee and ranged styles during battle to build combos, while Ampules recovered from defeated GEMs are used to create Genome Cubes. Those cubes can then be enhanced with EX Factors to improve stats, provide additional bonuses and unlock passive abilities. Conversation and Investigation events make up another part of the game, with timed decisions capable of affecting how events unfold.
The Western console versions will include Japanese voice acting with English text. The Steam release will support English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese text alongside Japanese voices. Digital releases are planned across all five platforms. Physical editions will be available for PS4, PS5 and the original Nintendo Switch in North America, while Europe gets a physical PS5 edition. Switch 2 will be digital-only in both regions.
There’s no more specific Western release date beyond 2027 yet. The newly launched English website and announcement trailer at least give us a much better look at what Compile Heart has been cooking, including the game’s decidedly unusual cylindrical dungeons.
