Highschool Possession

Highschool Possession tells the tale of a student named Hikaru, who one day finds his conscience mysteriously alternating between the bodies of two girls in his school. It is an interesting premise, but due to the short length of the game not a lot of time is spent on fleshing it out more. While the art and audio is decent enough the story could definitely have benefited from a bit more work.

Gameplay: The basic story is quite interesting, but due to its short length a lot of things feels glossed over.

Graphics: Nice artwork, but not many different backgrounds

Sound: The soundtrack is decent, but the game features no voice acting

Highschool Possession

Developer: AJTilley.com | Publisher: AJTilley.com | Release Date: 2015 | Genre: Adventure / Indie / Visual Novel | Website: Official Website | Purchase: Steam / MangaGamer.com

The protagonist of Highschool Possession, Hikaru, is just an ordinary student who is fortunate enough to know two of the most beautiful girls in school. He also has a crush on both girls, but are not sure how they feel about him. This all changes one day when Hikaru falls asleep after a terrible headache and wakes up to the fact that his conscience keeps shifting between the bodies of his two crushes. While inhabiting their bodies Hikaru discovers that their lives are not as problem free as he had imagined and so he sets out to try and help them overcome their demons.

Highschool Possession features a very interesting premise for a visual novel, but because it is such a short game it doesn’t really make full use of the scenario. Hikaru continually jumps between the bodies of Akiko, one of the most beautiful and intelligent girls in school and Kasumi, a gorgeous but shy member of the swimming team. Both girls have to deal with some very serious issues in their lives, but since the game is so brief they don’t feel very fleshed out. Akiko battles with depression due to a boyfriend who is only using her while Kasumi dreads school thanks to a bully who is making her life hell. With Hikaru in control of their bodies players are given the opportunity to intervene and solve their problems. Doing so leads to one of two good endings, depending on which girl was favored, while failure to help results in the bad endings.

Since Highschool Possession is a casual visual novel, there are not a lot of choices and the ones that are available doesn’t exactly branch the story significantly. This is fine for players who are looking for something light and entertaining to pass an hour or two, but anyone looking for something a bit more involving will be disappointed. A lot of important elements, such as why Hikaru “possesses” the two girls are glossed over and the way that he resolves their problems is also very abrupt.

Despite the serious issues tackled in the game, the protagonist still finds time to get up to some perverted stuff while inhabiting the bodies of the girls. Those playing the Steam version of the game will find these scenes get cut off rather abruptly though thanks to the censorship. The game is available from MangaGamer in uncensored form though, and comes with a free Steam key, which makes it the best way to experience it uncut. It has to be said that the h-scenes feel a bit out of place though, especially the ones where Hikaru has sex with another guy while in control of Akiko!

As far as the art is concerned, Highschool Possession is good, but not great. The girls look very attractive and the backgrounds are quite detailed, but the game doesn’t feature a lot of locations. The amount of CGs available is also rather low. In addition, the choice for blue text with white borders for all the dialogue in the game is rather questionable as it is not very easy on the eyes. Speaking of the text, we also encountered a couple of errors, such as “they” being used instead of “the” and “way” instead of “was.” Unfortunately, Highschool Possession does not feature any type of voice acting for any of the characters either. At least the soundtrack is decent enough and features a selection of good tunes.

With only two good endings and two bad ones it doesn’t take very long to experience everything that Highschool Possession has to offer. Newcomers to the genre will find it enjoyable enough, but there is not much here that veterans won’t have seen before. If the story and characters were more fleshed out it could have been a great game, but as it is Highschool Possession feels a bit average compared to other titles in the genre.

Hop into the cockpit of your fighter and take down a virtual network that has evolved a little too much for its own good in this shoot ‘em up from Bikkuri Software. It offers non-stop action and a bullet grazing mechanic that forces you to risk life and limb to boost your score while unleashing devastating attacks. The 16-bit style of the visuals and audio offers a nice blast from the past for fans of the genre, but even newcomers can ease into the action thanks to a practice mode and selectable difficulty settings. The game is a little short for our liking and the style might not appeal to everyone, but if you enjoy a good shoot ‘em up you can do far worse than this one. Gameplay: Being forced to skirt dangerously close to bullets instead of simply avoiding them makes for a frantic experience. Graphics: The 16-bit visual style is charming, but might not appeal to those who didn’t grow up with the genre. Sound: The soundtrack is good, but the sound effects lack a little punch.

Endless Fables: The Minotaur’s Curse

Endless Fables: The Minotaur's Curse

Play as a descendant of Ariadne and prevent the return of the Minotaur in this hidden object puzzle adventure from Sunward Games. The Greek mythology storyline offers a perfect excuse for visiting some exotic locations and while the game is quite easy, it still offers plenty of entertainment. It shares a lot of similarities with the Secret Order series from the same developer, but overall it still has plenty to offer fans. As long as you don’t expect anything groundbreaking from this title, it will provide you with a couple of hours of relaxing entertainment. Gameplay: A solid, Greek mythology themed hidden object puzzle adventure. Graphics: Varied locations featuring detailed visuals. Sound: Good, but not great.

Radio Viscera

Radio Viscera

Radio Viscera is a top-down shooter where you wield an air cannon instead of a traditional gun. However, this doesn't make your character any less lethal as the levels are littered with traps in which you can knock your foes. The result is a bloody and over-the-top game with wacky physics and plenty of action. It is the work of a solo developer, so there are a few rough edges here and there, but overall the game is a lot of fun. Gameplay: Dodge enemies while shooting them into traps with your air cannon. Graphics: The game looks decent but not spectacular. Sound: The sound effects and music are all great.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

It's easy to hate Stalker for all the things that it does wrong but if you take the time and effort to really get into the game instead of judging it by the standards of other First Person Shooters you will find a deeply engrossing and gripping experience that will keep you coming back for more. Gameplay: Tough as nails and very unforgiving but stick with it and you will be hooked. Graphics: Might not be cutting edge but still looks very good. Sound: Barring some weird voice glitches its all very good.

Resette’s Prescription ~Book of memory, Swaying scale~

Resette's Prescription ~Book of memory, Swaying scale~

Help the short tempered Resette and her feline companion Gaede as they enter the mind of a young boy suffering from a sleeping sickness. This point & click adventure features charming chibbi character designs and beautifull hand drawn watercolor backgrounds along with an interesting storyline. It is quite a short game though, and the puzzles pose little challenge, so it might not appeal to everyone. Gameplay: Short and easy, but certainly very entertaining. Graphics: We love the beautiful and unique visual style. Sound: Unfortunately there is no speech, but the music is very good.

Sakura Santa

Sakura Santa

Sakura Santa doesn’t bring anything new to the table in terms of story or gameplay, but it is a lighthearted and enjoyable title. Like all Sakura titles it is a little short and lacking in depth for our tastes, but the art is great and features no shortage of fanservice. Players looking for something different from Winged Cloud will be disappointed, but everyone who enjoys the Sakura titles will like this festive themed one. Gameplay: A typical Sakura title, so fans will know exactly what to expect. Graphics: Only a few girls and handful of locations, but everything looks great. Sound: No voice acting and the music is rather unremarkable.
