Paratopic

Paratopic

Paratopic is a game about smuggling VHS tapes across the border, but how it presents itself is more like a fever dream than a traditional adventure. To unnerve players even further, the visuals look like they are straight from the 32-bit era of horror titles, and the distorted speech sounds as creepy as can be. Even the story is split between three characters and plays out in disjointed vignettes that abruptly cut between each other. Despite all this and the short length of the game, it is a memorable experience and will definitely find an audience amongst certain players.

Gameplay: Paratopic is short, baffling, unnerving and somehow also very compelling and memorable.

Graphics: The 32-bit visuals look like they wouldn’t tax a Playstation One, but the frame rate is smooth, and the low-poly aesthetic really fits the game’s style.

Sound: The soundtrack consists of silence punctuated by synthesizers and droning sounds, while the distorted speech is unsettling, to say the least.

Rememoried

Rememoried

Rememoried combines surreal but beautiful visuals, atmospheric music, and some very perplexing puzzles into one unique experience. The landscapes you explore are not only dreamlike but, in true dream fashion, also change when you look away, which takes a while to get used to. Don’t expect just to walk around and gawk at the pretty visuals, though, as the game also features plenty of platform jumping, which can be tricky. Overall, it is an engrossing and unique title, but it might be a little too niche for some players.

Gameplay: The game doesn’t hold your hand or spell out what you must do, which can sometimes be confusing.

Graphics: The visuals are minimalist but very beautiful.

Sound: The audio is varied and very atmospheric

NaissanceE

NaissanceE

NaissanceE is not a game for players that want to know exactly what is going on at all times. Instead of offering any explanations the game simply drops you into a surreal and intimidating gameworld that thrives on your confusion. The result is an experience quite unlike anything else and one that will stay with you long after the journey is complete.

Gameplay: First person exploration with a dash of puzzle solving and platforming.

Graphics: Beautiful and imposing in equal measures.

Sound: Atmospheric audio that greatly enhances the whole experience
