The Zombie Island Of Dr. Ned is a good example of how to do DLC properly. With some nice new areas, a new visual palette and an interesting storyline this should definitely not be missed. Zombies have been done to death before (pun intended) but Borderlansd proves that there is still some life left in the undead.

Gameplay: A tighter story and lots of zombie killing action.

Graphics: A completely new look and feel for the game.

Sound: Good but would have liked to hear some new battle cries

Borderlands: The Zombie Island Of Dr. Ned

Developer: Gearbox Software | Publisher: 2K Games | Release Date: 2009 | Genre: First Person Shooter / RPG | Website: Official Website | Purchase: Steam

The first bit of DLC for Borderlands, titled “The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned” opens with Marcus Kincaid telling a bedtime story to his son. It seems that the milling town (yes apparently Pandora does have trees) of Jakobs Cove has fallen foul to an undead scourge. The corporation who owns the town obviously wants the situation taken care of which is where you come in.

Jacobs Cove and its twisted story are set apart from the main game and can be accessed from any fast travel station. While it is recommended that you finish the main story first, there is nothing preventing you from jumping right into the zombie slaying action. The DLC has a completely different look and feel to the main game with some spooky new scenery. The town and surroundings is bathed in the light of a full moon and you get to visit all the classic horror movie locations like a cemetery, hospital and pumpkin patch. The whole thing has a very Tim Burton look to it which fits the Borderlands humor perfectly.

As the name suggests you’ll be battling hordes of zombies but you can expect to run into some were-skags, tankensteins and other nasties such as the loot goon as well. Zombies are unarmed but some like the defilers will projectile vomit all over you which slows you down and obscures your vision. This is two handicaps that you do not want in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. There are also some cool new bosses for you to battle. You’ll be battling against hordes of zombies so it is a pity that this DLC does not increase your level cap. The areas are a lot more claustrophobic than those of the main game so unfortunately there are no vehicle sections. You cannot fast travel to other areas in Jakobs Cove either which means that there is a lot of running back and forth between missions. Since the zombies respawn all the time you will have your work cut out for you.

Apart from the story missions there is also a bounty board in Jakobs Cove with a few new side missions. These do not really deviate from the standard fetch/kill missions but at least they are quite funny. Be sure not to miss a very special zombie who has an optional quest for you! This DLC seems to be lacking any cool new weapons and features which are bound to disappoint some players. After completing everything I only had one new, marginally better sniper-rifle to show for my troubles. There are also no new skills for any of the characters, which is a pity. Even some new battle cries would have been nice as by now I’m quite tired of hearing the same phrases yelled during combat.

Those who found the plot of the main game uninspiring will appreciate the tighter narrative in this DLC. The humor is brilliant and Gearbox even pokes fun at themselves for re-using some character models. Shooting the limbs off zombies and watching them keep coming is a blast and a few of them even managed to startle me by sneaking up behind me. Turning around to see a suicidal bomber zombie bearing down on you is quite a sight and you’ll only make the mistake of using electrical based attacks on a Frankenstein enemy once before realizing what a bad idea it is.

If you enjoyed Borderlands then you will definitely want to check out this DLC. It took me just over five hours to complete everything it had to offer and I had a blast doing so. At this point, the best bet is to buy the “Game of the Year” edition which includes all four DLC which is perfect if you have yet to experience Borderlands.

Fallout 3 - Point Lookout

The spooky swamps of Point Lookout are a welcome break from the dusty wasteland. Infested with mutated hillbillies and crazy cultists there is lots of interesting locations to explore. It is a little lacking in good loot, but the story and location hold up well. Gameplay: Less linear than previous DLC and a lot creepier. Graphics: A new location and a few new enemies. Sound: Still good.

Game of Thrones - A Telltale Games Series - Episode 01: Iron From Ice

Previous attempts at turning game of Thrones into a traditional gaming experience has had mixed results, but this adventure from Telltale Games hits all the right marks. It’s got a cast of intriguing characters, gripping storyline and plenty of drama to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout its two hour runtime. Interaction is rather limited, but the overall experience is very true to the source material. Gameplay: Basically a few quick time events and dialogue choices. Graphics: The game uses a stylish painterly look for its characters and locations. Sound: Great music and top notch voice acting especially from the television show actors reprising their roles.

Heroes of Loot

Heroes of Loot

Heroes of Loot is a great title for when you need a quick action fix and don’t want to get bogged down with small details like inventory management or stat allocation. You simply race through dungeon floors, killing everything in sight and grabbing whatever loot you can find. It doesn’t have a lot of depth, but since dungeons are randomly generated and increase in difficulty the more you play the replay value is quite high. It is also very reasonably priced, which means there is no excuse for not giving it a shot. Gameplay: The focus is very much on action and there isn’t much that gets in the way of that. Graphics: Some lovely pixel art visuals with nice enemy designs. Sound: Decent, but the sound effects are a little underwhelming.

Goats On A Bridge

Goats On A Bridge

Don’t be fooled by the cute graphics, Goats On A Bridge can easily cause you to rage quit after your hapless goat tumbles off a bridge or roll into a crate it was supposed to jump over, for the umpteenth time. Taking control of two goats at the same time, and then navigating them across an obstacle course is not easy, but it is quite fun. The game is even more entertaining if you can rope in another poor soul to help you with the goats. Gameplay: The game packs a mean challenge, but it is relatively short. Graphics: The levels are bright and cartoony, while the already adorable goats can be made even more charming with accessories. Sound: A couple of nice tunes and the usual wacky assortment of sound effects.

Atomic Heart

Atomic Heart

Atomic Heart is a single-player first-person shooter that tasks players with saving a retrofuturistic Soviet utopia from a robot uprising. The look and style of the game immediately draw comparisons to classics such as Bioshock, but Atomic Heart has some interesting ideas of its own too. The combat, which is filled with giant adversaries, powerful guns, and interesting polymer abilities makes for visceral encounters, but things like quick time events and tedious fetch quests mar the experience. Players hoping to sneak through the game will also quickly end up frustrated. Nevertheless, despite some issues, Atomic Heart is worth the experience, and fans of the genre will enjoy what it has to offer. Gameplay: After a slow start the action picks up considerably and the game is filled with lots of action as well as some exploration and puzzle-solving. Graphics: The Unreal Engine 4 is put to good use in Atomic Heart to deliver stunning outdoor vistas as well as massive boss battles and detailed indoor environments. Sound: The voice acting can be a bit questionable at times, but the sound effects and soundtrack are really good.

PSYCHO-PASS: Mandatory Happiness

PSYCHO-PASS: Mandatory Happiness

PSYCHO-PASS: Mandatory Happiness is based on the popular anime series of the same name, but this engaging visual novel isn’t afraid to carve out its own path. It features a very memorable setting, interesting characters, and plenty of content to explore. The story is a little darker than most visual novels on Steam, which is a good thing, and familiarity with the anime series isn’t required to enjoy this title. Any fans of the genre looking for something that will keep them busy for a while should definitely add PSYCHO-PASS to their collection. Gameplay: The game features an engaging storyline, two protagonists, and many different endings. Graphics: The visuals consist of great character designs and backgrounds but not much in the way of animations. Sound: Players can expect full voice acting for all the characters and some nice background music.
