Nurse Love Addiction might look like a typical yuri visual novel at first glance, but it actually has a lot more to offer. The story starts off very light, but depending on the choices you make and route you take it can become quite dark. It is also one of those games where it is better to experience the plot twists and turns for yourself instead of having them spoiled for you, so play the game and find out what all the fuss is about.

Gameplay: Features a branching storyline with plenty of different endings to reach.

Graphics: No animation and limited locations, but the art style is very good.

Nurse Love Addiction

Developer: KOGADO STUDIO | Publisher: Degica | Release Date: 2016 | Genre: Adventure / Simulation | Website: N/A | Purchase: Steam

Nurse Love Addiction is the latest yuri visual novel to reach Steam and stars Asuka Osachi, a young student who enrolls at the Teito Nursing School with her sister Nao. All her life Asuka has been content just floating from one thing to another without any real purpose, earning the nickname “Leader of the Jellyfish Club” in the process. However, when her fellow club members start to take their future more seriously Asuka is left wonder what to do. Eventually she discovers her answer scrawled in the back of her favorite childhood book in which her younger self expressed a desire to become a nurse.

Asuka is a bit of an airhead, and spoiled rotten by Nao, it is no surprise when her sibling enrolls along with her to keep her in line. There the two also runs into Sakuya and Itsuki, a dating couple, as well as the beautiful Kaede, their homeroom teacher. All of these girls end up playing an important role in Asuka’s life, depending on which of the routes players take through the game. In all there are nine different endings to uncover, four good, four bad and one where she doesn’t end up with any girl.

Initially Nurse Love Addiction feels like a typical slice of life visual novel with plenty of drama and a bit of romance, especially when playing through the Kaede story arch. This is because most of the story takes place at the nursing school and dorms as well as a few surrounding spots. There are school events like festivals, summer vacation breaks and of course, lots of nursing related scenarios.

However, playing through the other story paths reveals a lot more surprising twists and turns. In fact, some of the bad endings, left us with our mouths hanging open due to how dark things can get. There’s not much more that can be said without spoiling any surprises, but suffice to say that Nurse Love Addiction is not your usual fluffy yuri love story. This might disappoint some people as the game features no nudity and the actual yuri scenes are mostly just kissing. The story is genuinely engaging, though, but we recommend playing through all the routes to understanding everything that is going on. Trust us, the neutral ending doesn’t even begin to delve into the really weird that can happen.

Visually Nurse Love Addiction looks really good with some nicely drawn artwork. The game favors a soft, pastel coloring style for the art, which is quite pleasant. Although the cast isn’t very big, they are all well drawn and unique. We would have liked to see a few more locations as apart from a few unique scenes, such as the beach and a convention, most of the story takes place at school or in dorm rooms. In total the game features 54 CGs, and those already seen by players can be viewed again from the main menu after completing the game at least once.

The audio also impresses with about fifteen music tracks in total. From the bouncy and cheerful “Even nurses are just girls” to the eerie and sinister “The Growing Black and Red World” these tracks are a great match for the game. The two vocal tracks “Sunny Place” and “A Future With You” also stand out as really good. The voice acting doesn’t disappoint either as all of the major characters are fully voiced in Japanese. The background music, voices and sound effect volume can all be adjusted independently and you can toggle individual voices on or off. You can even choose any of the girls to do the system sounds, which is a very cute touch.

In typical visual novel fashion you can left-click or press a button to advance through all the text. The interface is straightforward and every easy to use, with the “Skip to next choice” button in particular something we wish more visual novels included. Initially there were some language issues, but this was quickly addressed in a patch.

Nurse Love Addiction is definitely a game that surprised us and we recommend going into it knowing as little as possible about the full story. The characters you encounter all have their own charm and unique backstories that make them interesting. Those expecting a straightforward and feel-good yuri visual novel are probably in for a shock, but overall we recommend that anyone who enjoys a good story check out this game. It features plenty of choices and enough story branches that it kept us busy for more than 20 hours to see everything.

Dark Sheep

Dark Sheep

Dark Sheep is an addictive block-pushing puzzle game that combines the classic Sokoban formula with some new elements. The Commodore 64 inspired visuals and retro soundtrack, along with the horror theme, sets this game apart. However, it is also enjoyable enough that even players who are not necessarily into retro stuff will get hooked. Gameplay: Straightforward to pick up and play, but some of the puzzles are downright devious. Graphics: Very simple but true to the Commodore 64 era from which it draws inspiration. Sound: The soundtrack is so good that we wished there was more of it.

Sweetest Monster

Sweetest Monster

Sweetest Monster is a release by ebi-hime, which means interesting characters and memorable situations. It is definitely a much darker title than what you might think, but one that kept us hooked right to the very end. At only about 40,000 words, it is slightly shorter than the average visual novel, but the story is good, and the price is very reasonable. Anyone looking for something with a bit more substance than the typical lighthearted catgirl visual novels should definitely give this kinetic novel a try. Gameplay: The story is beautifully written and definitely very memorable despite the lack of choices or branches. Graphics: The game features only a limited number of character sprites and backgrounds, but they are all great. Sound: There is no voice acting, but the background music and sound effects are of a very high standard.

Lust from Beyond

Lust from Beyond

Lust From Beyond invites players to a world where the occult blends with erotic themes. As Victor Holloway, an antiquarian plagued by dark visions, players will cross paths with two cults tied to the mythical land of ecstasy called Lusst'ghaa. Be warned, though, as this game is filled with sex, violence, torture, and other disturbing elements. Players who enjoyed the original will appreciate the improvements in this game, but there are still some elements that could have been better. Gameplay: A combination of sneaking, fighting, puzzle-solving, and exploring disturbing environments. Graphics: Interesting and unique locations, but character models and animations could be better. Sound: The soundtrack and effects are good, but the voice acting is a mixed bag.

Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight is an action-packed Metroidvania title with a fascinating and sprawling game world to explore. This world is also inhabited by some of the genre's strangest and most fascinating enemies and NPCs. Completing the game provides a nice challenge, but players determined to uncover every secret and ending will be surprised to see how much is lurking beneath the cute exterior of Hollow Knight. Gameplay: Hollow Knight is an absolute blast to play, and there's so much to see and do that players can easily lose hours in Hallownest. Graphics: The 2D visuals are charming, and the character designs, as well as unique areas, make for a memorable experience. Sound: Everything from the haunting soundtrack to the strange language spoken by the bugs is superb.

BeatBlasters III

BeatBlasters III

BeatBlasters III shows a lot of imagination but has the gameplay to back up the wacky plot. The developers have gone for a quality over quantity approach with each level looking totally unique. It takes a while to get used to the controls but using a controller makes a big difference. If you are looking for an interesting fusion of platforming, puzzle solving and rhythm based action then grab yourself a copy. Gameplay: A very interesting fusion of genres. Graphics: The 2D visuals are packed with detail and imagination. Sound: The music is not my favorite genre but it matches the theme of the game.

Grimm

Grimm

Grimm offers a very unique look at some classic fairy tales and with 23 episodes there is something for everyone. The episodes are short enough to remain fun despite the repetition and the gruesome visual transformations are still impressive. The budget price also makes it an attractive package for players who missed the original release. Gameplay: Very easy to pick up and play. Graphics: The way everything transfers from light to dark is pretty impressive. Sound: Good voice acting and some very suitable music.
