Hidden Cats in New York swaps locations but retains everything that made Hidden Cats in London such a casual and enjoyable title. This time there are more cats to find and new bonus levels, but the game remains accessible and addictive. The game is also very reasonably priced, so players won’t have any buyer’s remorse even after completing it in one or two sessions.

Gameplay: Most of the cats are easy to spot, but some of them can be quite elusive, and earning all the achievements is very rewarding.

Graphics: The New York City illustration is packed with even more detail than the London one, and the new bonus levels are a blast.

Sound: The relaxing soundtrack is a good match for the game, and the volume levels can be tweaked as desired

Hidden Cats in New York

Developer: Nukearts Studio | Publisher: Nukearts Studio | Release Date: 2023| Genre: Casual / Hidden Object / Indie | Website: N/A | Purchase: Steam

The cats are back, and this time they are hiding in the Big Apple. Hidden Cats in New York, the follow-up to Hidden Cats in London by Nukearts Studio, switches the scenery but retains the casual and relaxing gameplay. Players are once again challenged to find all the hidden kittens lurking about the massive hand-drawn illustration.

As with the previous game, players have access to “Normal” and “Advanced” modes. Both feature the same monochromatic sketch of New York City and are filled with cats to find. The Normal Mode features 120 cats that can always be found in the same spots, and players are provided with five hints to use if they get stuck. Advanced Mode ups the ante with 200 cats that are scattered about in random positions. In addition, Advanced Mode also has 12 “special” cats to locate, which unlocks bonus levels. Finally, Advanced Mode also challenges players to find 20 city people in order to earn hints. It will all feel very familiar to fans of the previous games, but the increased kitty count and new map are welcome additions.

As before, the cats can be found by simply clicking on them, which will then fill them with color. Players can zoom in or out to get a better view, and the maps are also large enough that they can scroll horizontally or vertically. If enough cats are found in close proximity to each other, the entire section will be filled with color. This not only looks great but makes it easy to see in which areas hidden cats might still be lurking. Nukearts Studio has also included some handy accessibility options, such as dark Mode, inverted mouse zoom, mouse drag sensitivity, and edge screen scrolling to accommodate all types of players.

The New York City map looks great and features all the expected landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. The city is viewed from the side, with traffic visible in the foreground, buildings towards the back, and even the river with a few boats in the background. This leaves plenty of spots for the cats to hide, and once again, most of them are easy to spot, but there are a few that requires more effort to track down. The six bonus levels can be unlocked by finding the two special cats that are associated with each one. For this game, the bonus levels are Smellie Cat Caffè, a rooftop, metro, museum, town’s park, and our favorite, Ninja Cats Headquarters. These levels are smaller than the main one but are big enough to hide between 50 and 100 kittens. Despite being smaller in scope than the city level, finding all the cats on the bonus levels can be tricky as some of them hide behind objects. Fortunately, there’s usually a small animation that will give away their position to eagle-eyed players.

Hidden Cats in New York features a relaxing soundtrack that is a good match for the casual nature of the game. Scrolling around the map will still elicit “meows” from any cats that are hidden in the vicinity. This is useful for tracking down particularly elusive cats, but it can be a little annoying when scrolling around a map only to be greeted by a chorus of meows. Of course, players can also reduce the volume of these meows or disable them altogether if preferred.

Overall, Hidden Cats in New York is just as much fun as the previous entry, and while short, it is definitely worth the reasonable asking price. The game is addictive enough that most players will probably complete it in one sitting, so thankfully, the Advanced Mode offers some additional replay value. The cats are adorable, especially the photos of the “special” ones, and the artwork also contains plenty of neat easter eggs that we won’t spoil. Suffice it to say if you were a fan of the previous games or want a stress-free and enjoyable hidden object game, then Hidden Cats in New York won’t disappoint.

Pyrite Heart

Pyrite Heart is an Otome visual novel that looks great, but the story is very short and lacking in depth. The heroine is also a spoiled rich princess, which might not be that appealing for players who are not fans of tsundere characters. It's not a bad game, but there are far better titles in the genre. Gameplay: Short and the story is not that interesting. Graphics: The artwork is very good. Sound: No voice acting, but the music is decent.

Anna’s Quest

Anna's Quest

Anna's Quest manages to combine its engaging story and charming characters with plenty of humor and even some darker elements, making it a treat to play. It is a really entertaining title that is made even better thanks to its logical but challenging puzzles, and hopefully, there will be more quests waiting for Anna in the future. Gameplay: Puzzles that are challenging but logical ensure that the game remains entertaining. Graphics: The game features charming visuals and great animations. Sound: Anna's Quest has nice music and excellent voice acting.

Gris

Gris

Gris is a beautiful platform adventure with wonderful level designs and interesting puzzles. It is a very serene experience, though, as there is no threat of death or fear of danger. Some players will enjoy this casual experience as they explore the world and engage in light puzzle solving, but others might find it a little too easy and boring. Gameplay: The game is very easy, but exploring the environments is enjoyable. Graphics: Gris features a beautiful art style and great animations. Sound: The audio consists of an incredible soundtrack and great sound effects.

Switchball HD

Switchball HD

Switchball HD is the definitive version of this classic puzzle platformer. The higher frame rate, along with the visual enhancements, makes this game a treat to play, and the gameplay is still as addictive as it was all those years ago. Atomic Elbow clearly put a lot of effort into this release, and we recommend it to all fans of the original as well as newcomers. Gameplay: Switchball HD is easy to pick up and play, but later levels will challenge your skills. Graphics: Switchball has never looked better, thanks to a range of improvements. Sound: The game features a great soundtrack and realistic sound effects

Pinball Arcade - Tales of the Arabian Nights™

Tales of the Arabian Nights might look like a complex table, but it actually has some very easy to grasp rules. Even inexperienced players should have no trouble reaching the wizard mode after putting in some practice, but there is enough variety to keep you coming back for more. This is a very sought after table in real life which makes it even more incredible that this faithful digital version is absolutely free. Gameplay: The table features a great design with easy objectives for beginners. Graphics: A faithful reproduction of a great looking table. Sound: Distinctive audio with some great speech samples and effects.

If you are a fan of the original role playing gamebook you will love the way that Tin Man Games brought it to life. You'll still spend most of your time reading, but the great illustrations and comic book style presentation along with the soundtrack brings everything to life. The storyline is pretty straightforward, but infused with plenty of humor and parodies which makes it more entertaining. The different powers and story branches also give the game a lot of replay value. Gameplay: Like reading a visual novel and making the key choices yourself. Graphics: No animations, but some nice comic book style art and bold colors. Sound: The music and sound effects make the game feel more dynamic.
