Rise of The Indie Game Studios

Rise of The Indie Game Studios

Gaming has been a popular hobby for many people over the years. The industry has a whole has undergone significant changes, especially in the last few years with gaming appealing to an even broader audience. The major gaming studios, like Nintendo, developed many of the popular game titles enjoyed today. However, in recent years, the independent gaming studios have begun to compete on a wider level with these industry leaders.

The original indie games were known as shareware in the 1990’s. They didn’t earn the developers much money who instead developed them as a hobby rather than as a serious money making venture. It hasn’t been until recently that some of these games have been catapulted to the top, some creating quite a stir. When this level of success became more common, developers working for the major gaming studios began leaving to go it on their own. This led to even more indie games being created.

PCs were the devices that ran the initial indie games. As time went on and technology changed, they began to be adapted to other formats as well. Gaming consoles began being able to play some of these indie games as did mobile phones. When first developing indie games for mobile phones, there were quite a number of operating systems that were used. This did hinder the development some, but eventually Apple and Android became the industry standards.

While the internet helped the indie game industry reach even wider audiences, it has also been instrumental in the growth of other entertainment sectors. A few early shareware titles attempted to emulate the experience of casino games, but obviously without the real-world payouts. Thanks to the internet, casino online experiences could become more than just games and can now be played in browsers or even via mobile phones.

Some of today’s most popular games have been the product of indie gaming studios. The future of these designers seems to remain strong, ensuring that high quality indie games will continue to be available to consumers.

It is crazy to think that with all the indie bundles that are out these days it is cheaper to buy a dozen of them than it was to upgrade one shareware game in the nineties to the full version. I actually wonder how long this indie boom will last as the quality is already dropping and many devs seem to churn out games purely to land in bundles.
