S.W.A.N.: Chernobyl Unexplored Releasing In April

The Chernobyl disaster, which took place on 26 April 1986, has had a huge cultural impact, particularly on video games. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R series is perhaps the most well-known example, but everything from Call of Duty to Metal Gear Solid has featured nods to the disaster. Now, on the 35th anniversary of the tragic event, another title is getting a release. It is titled S.W.A.N.: Chernoby Unexplored, and will be released on Steam courtesy of Art Game Studio and Volframe on 26 April 2021.

The game is set a few months after the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant disaster and sees players go on a research expedition where they will be one of the first to get inside the S.W.A.N Institute since the reactor failure. It is a place that was kept secret by ZSRR authorities and home to things that go far beyond the limit of human imagination. S.W.A.N. blends first-person shooting, science fiction, puzzles, and horror as players encounter the unexplained phenomena and anomalies inside the facility.

According to Jakub Bąk, CEO of Art Games Studio, S.W.A.N. is a project that defies traditional genre schemes. However, he promises that players can count on a unique experience that is filled with disturbing and surreal elements. Przemysław Kostrzewa, founder of the Volframe studio and the author of the game, added that the idea for the game was based on not just the disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, but also diseases that remain a mystery to medicine. It is these elements that he believes will make the game unique and fascinating to players.

In S.W.A.N.: Chernobyl Unexplored players can look forward to a fascinating story of psychological horror mixed with science fiction elements. Players will encounter rare and unknown diseases, abstract and varied puzzles, and lots of radiation. The game also features unique devices constructed at the Institute that are used for defense and to overcome obstacles. In addition, players will have to use the institution’s computer system as they experience the atmosphere and style of the USSR of the 1980s.
