SteamWorld Dig

SteamWorld Dig

SteamWorld Dig makes the transition from 3DS to PC flawlessly and loses none of its addictive charm along the way. Carving out your own mining tunnels while avoiding or killing the enemies is loads of fun, and there is always one more upgrade or power to tempt you back.

Gameplay: SteamWorld Dig is polished, entertaining, and incredibly addictive.

Graphics: The visuals consist of charming high-definition 2D graphics.

Sound: The game features some western-flavored tunes and spot-on sound effects

Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage

Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage

2D arcade style action games like Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage is still a bit of a niche genre on PC, but don’t let that deter you from this title. There is enough fast paced combat to satisfy any action junkie and the stylish visuals are a treat for the eyes. It is clear that a lot of effort went into the design and presentation of this game and it is a title that I can wholeheartedly recommend.

Gameplay: Frenetic combat that is very satisfying to master and two unique characters to swap between.

Graphics: Excellent backgrounds and outstanding character designs.

Sound: Some authentic and atmospheric tunes

Walkerman by Scalemail

Walkerman by Scalemail

The amount of English visual novels on the market has steadily been increasing, so it is becoming more difficult for new entries to stand out from the crowd. However, Walkerman immediately caught our attention thanks to its promise of hunting supernatural creatures. Starring Jorgen, a young man from the countryside, the game will follow his adventures as he embarks on his new career as a walkerman

The Path

The Path

The Path is the very definition of a game that people either love to bits or completely hate. Since many players simple miss the point, or end up disappointed because the experience doesn’t conform to what they expect from a game, its hard to recommend The Path to the average gamer. However, if you can handle something new and unique, The Path will blow your mind.

Gameplay: Not your typical kind of game, but don’t let this deter you from a unique playing experience.

Graphics: The graphics have an intentional Playstation 2 style to them.

Sound: Catchy, creepy and memorable in equal measures

Lilly Looking Through

Lilly Looking Through

Lilly Looking Through manages to captivate without being dragged down by some of the more cumbersome aspects of the genre. The beautiful artwork and animations will draw you in while the clever puzzles are a challenge without ever becoming too obscure. I only wish there was more to experience as the adventure ended all too soon.

Gameplay: A nice take on the point & click adventure genre.

Graphics: Beautiful backgrounds and outstanding character animations.

Sound: Atmospheric and relaxing

Heroes of Loot

Heroes of Loot

Heroes of Loot is a great title for when you need a quick action fix and don’t want to get bogged down with small details like inventory management or stat allocation. You simply race through dungeon floors, killing everything in sight and grabbing whatever loot you can find. It doesn’t have a lot of depth, but since dungeons are randomly generated and increase in difficulty the more you play the replay value is quite high. It is also very reasonably priced, which means there is no excuse for not giving it a shot.

Gameplay: The focus is very much on action and there isn’t much that gets in the way of that.

Graphics: Some lovely pixel art visuals with nice enemy designs.

Sound: Decent, but the sound effects are a little underwhelming

Mystik Belle

Mystik Belle

Mystik Belle features an addictive blend of classic platforming Metroidvania-inspired exploration and a healthy dose of point-and-click adventure-style puzzles. The beautiful pixel art visuals are a definite plus, and the charming characters, as well as varied locations, will keep you hooked. The puzzles and limited inventory might not appeal to players looking for a more traditional Metroidvania-style platformer, but Mystik Belle is definitely worth checking out.

Gameplay: Mystik Belle has many areas to explore, many clever puzzles, and some huge bosses to defeat.

Graphics: The game boasts beautiful pixel art visuals with large, detailed sprites and memorable backgrounds.

Sound: The audio is impressive and features a catchy chiptune soundtrack

Rebel Galaxy (Double Damage Games)

Rebel Galaxy (Double Damage Games)

After being given the opportunity to check out a preview build of the upcoming Rebel Galaxy by Double Damage Games I jumped at the chance as I loved the premise of the game. However, even I was surprised by how well the developers pulled off their take on the whole swashbuckling space adventure genre. My love for the genre stretches back to Star Control II, Frontier and Privateer, but after a couple of hours with Rebel Galaxy I have no doubt that it will be joining the ranks of those titles

Toren

Toren

Toren is an ambitious and enjoyable debut title from Swordtales that will appeal to fans of the genre. The visuals lack polish in certain areas and the controls can be clunky, but ascending the tower and exploring the surreal dreams of the protagonist is quite a memorable experience. It is also a game that doesn’t hold your hand or spell out everything for you, so be prepared to unravel its mysteries and metaphors on your own.

Gameplay: There is not as much action as we expected, but there are still plenty of unique areas to explore and puzzles to solve.

Graphics: The visuals can be rough around the edges, but they are vibrant, detailed, and often downright beautiful.

Sound: Toren features a great soundtrack as well as good sound effects
