Cat Girl Alliance

If you like your visual novels with plenty of sex scenes and very little plot, then I guess Cat Girl Alliance will be appealing. The limited amount of characters, futanari elements and lack of anything interesting happening beyond the sex scenes will however limit the audience of this game. While not the worst visual novel that I have played it is nothing special either.

Gameplay: Non-existent and with a bare bones storyline as well.

Graphics: Quite dated and the art style is a bit hit-and-miss.

Sound: A few nice tunes, but overall unremarkable

Cat Girl Alliance

Developer: Sekilala | Publisher: G-Collections | Release Date: 2010 | Genre: Visual Novel | Website: N/A | Purchase: JAST USA

When Eiji transfers to a new college, he finds himself without any friends. The girl sitting behind him in class, Shizuko, catches his eye as well as Rumi, the class representative. It is only once Eiji decides to join an after-school club that he stumbles into the nurse’s office and discover Rumi and her friend, Natsuki, engaged in some sexual activities. Rumi manages to draw Eiji into this “club” and it’s not long before Shizuko joins as well.

Cat Girl Alliance is as the box states, an “erotic bishojo game for adults only” and as such should be kept away from children. While the game is not as twisted as some other entries in the genre, seeing as all the sexual activities that take place are consensual, it is definitely not for the easily offended or faint of heart. While Rumi is not a “cat girl” (she just likes dressing up as one) she is definitely a futanari, or hermaphrodite to those not familiar with the term. This fact, along with the completely uncensored graphics should be enough to deter most people from this title. If not, there is still lots of bondage, masochism, bodily functions and humiliation that crop up.

Cat Girl Alliance does not have much of a plot and generally does not waste any time getting to the h-scenes. I’m sure there are those that who will appreciate this, but it makes the game boring after a while and the characters are just flat stereotypes. Most of the action takes place in the school infirmary, although there are other locations like the library and a park as well. You only interact with three girls, although Rumis younger step-brother also makes a few appearances. The less said about him the better though. The few times that you do get to make any choices are few and far between, making the game feel even shallower than its competitors.

While the game was only localized in 2010 it came out in 2004 already so the visuals are nothing special. The resolution is stuck at 640×480 and the character paper dolls have very limited outfits and expressions.

There are only eight or so audio tracks, although two, namely “Gaze Into Twilight” and “Sparkling Summer” are rather nice. The voice acting is in Japanese and about what you would expect from a title such as this.

Without an interesting plot or characters, Cat Girl Alliance is just a collection of hentai images connected by some boring text. If that is all that you want, fine, but there are cheaper and better ways to view stuff like that.

Stranger of Sword City

Stranger of Sword City

Stranger of Sword City is a dungeon crawler with an interesting mix of fantasy and reality. The world of Escario is a fascinating but unforgiving place to explore, so brace yourself for quite a challenge. Battles are frequent and brutal, but you have total control over how you want to shape your party of monster slayers. Tracking down and killing all the Lineage-type creatures will keep players busy for ages, so don't expect to finish this game in a day. If you are looking for an old-school dungeon crawler and can handle a challenge, then Stranger of Sword City is the game to play. Gameplay: The game is tough and unforgiving but also gratifying. Graphics: While the game features beautiful artwork, the dungeon textures could have been better. Sound: The game features Japanese voiceovers and some nice background music.

Shadowhand: RPG Card Game

Shadowhand: RPG Card Game

Shadowhand is another entertaining, addictive, and polished solitaire-based game from Grey Alien Games, creators of the very enjoyable Regency Solitaire. It shares some similarities with its predecessor, but the story is brand new, and the gameplay offers enough new additions and tweaks to ensure that it feels fresh. Luck plays a significant role in the game, which is unavoidable for the genre, but careful planning and using the right items can help a lot. This means the game is much more strategic than you might think, and we can heartily recommend it to fans of the genre. Gameplay: The solitaire-based gameplay is addictive, as always, but the addition of duels and other elements makes it even better. Graphics: The art and design of the game look great, and everything feels very polished. Sound: Sadly, there is no voice acting, but everything from the music to the sound effects is top-notch.

An Assassin in Orlandes

An Assassin in Orlandes

Tin Man Games have done a great job porting over classic gamebook adventures, but this is their first attempt at bringing something brand new to the table. With its fantasy setting and interesting storyline, An Assassin In Orlandes definitely feels like it could have originated from the same era as gamebooks like The Forrest of Doom. However, it is a very enjoyable and gripping tale in its own right. The heavy reliance on dice throws and luck might annoy some players, but thanks to the “Casual” mode, this is an adventure that can be enjoyed by anyone. Gameplay: The story is quite good, but prepare yourself for plenty of dice rolls to test your luck. Graphics: Faithful to the look of the old gamebooks, but we would have liked to see more illustrations. Sound: The audio remains fairly mellow and unobtrusive throughout your adventure.

Mind Spheres

Mind Spheres

Mind Spheres is an interesting combination of physics puzzles, mini-golf and pinball, that is unfortunately a little too short and easy for its own good. The game is quite relaxing and perfect for killing some time when you are not in the mood for more involved games, but it does suffer from a rather nasty memory leak, which requires frequent restarts. If you can put up with all of this, you'll find a game with levels that are satisfying to solve, but don't expect it to keep you busy for long. Gameplay: An interesting concept, but the fifty levels are over before you really feel challenged. Graphics: Very minimal, but it still looks fine. Sound: The piano tunes are quite soothing, but they do feel somewhat out of place.

Shmups Skill Test

Shmups Skill Test

Shmups Skill Test is a collection of mini-games that are designed to test how good you are at playing arcade and bullet hell shooters. While this means it doesn’t have as much depth as other titles in the genre, it still provides a nice diversion and a way to hone your skills. Since it is based on a rather old arcade game the visuals are far from cutting edge, but the gameplay and low price tag make up for this. If you think you have mastered the genre, then try out this game to see for sure. Gameplay: Lots of fun in short bursts, but obviously doesn’t have as much depth as full-fledged shooters. Graphics: The visuals are definitely showing their age. Sound: Not your typical shooter soundtrack.

Submerged: Hidden Depths

Submerged: Hidden Depths

Submerged: Hidden Depths builds on the solid foundation of the first game with a bigger world, better visuals, and more things to do. Unfortunately, the game is still devoid of challenges, but its accessibility and lack of threats make for a very relaxing experience. While it will not appeal to everyone, it is a great title for fans of the first game or anyone looking for something calming to play between more challenging titles. Gameplay: The game is devoid of any challenges but enjoyable and relaxing to play. Graphics: Beautiful environments coupled with excellent water and weather effects. Sound: The haunting soundtrack and immersive sound effects complement the visuals nicely.
