Zenge is a simple, straightforward puzzle game combining tangrams and sliding blocks. The minimalist art style is easy on the eyes, and while the game is short, it keeps introducing new mechanics to keep the gameplay interesting. It is also as affordable as its mobile counterpart, so there’s no reason to miss out if you want to play it on your PC instead of your phone.

Gameplay: Playing the game is simple, straightforward, and quite relaxing.

Graphics: Visually, it is minimalist, but the story artwork is neat.

Sound: The audio consists of soothing piano tunes

Zenge

Zenge is a relaxing minimalist puzzle game, which is not at all what we expected from a publisher called Hamster on Coke Games. The gameplay is a mixture of tangrams and sliding block puzzles woven together with the story of a character named Eon. Apparently, Eon is a lonely journeyman stuck between the worlds and time. Still, seeing as no text or speech accompanies the minimalist images, the story is very much open to interpretation.

After starting up the game, it is immediately apparent that Zenge had a start on mobile devices, but this does not hamper the experience in any way. Sure, the minimalist visuals and control scheme are probably more at home on your phone than on a giant PC screen, but the gameplay is just as solid. Even better, the developer kept the price the same so the game can be yours for pocket change. In exchange, you get 70 odd levels of creative puzzles. The whole thing can be completed in less than two hours, depending on your puzzle-solving skills, but although short-lived, it is pretty entertaining.

The primary goal for each level is to get all the tangram-style pieces to specific spots on the board. This is accomplished by the traditional sliding block puzzle method of moving them around. However, instead of the conventional grid, the lines in Zenge are all over the place. The same rules still apply, so pieces can block each other, and you can’t move one piece through another. Even so, dragging pieces across straight lines is a straightforward concept, so thankfully, Zenge continues introducing new mechanics to keep things fresh. Not only do the pieces come in different shapes and sizes, but soon, you will have to move them to special spots where they can be rotated or mirrored. Some specially marked pieces can also be connected permanently if moved next to each other in the right place. Eventually, players also need to deal with shrinking and growing pieces or using teleportation spots to move pieces around the board. Finally, color-coded pieces are introduced and must be used to activate switches that open up color-coded paths on the board. It might sound complicated, but all of these mechanics are introduced gradually. The game never becomes frustrating enough to warrant any hair-pulling either, as even levels that combine all the mechanics can be completed easily enough with some thought.

To ensure that Zenge stays relaxing the developers have done away with all the usual hindrances such as scores, stars, move counters, or time limits. It’s also impossible to make wrong moves, so there’s no need ever to restart a level because you are stuck. Even achievements have been relegated to a single one for beating the entire game to keep things as distraction-free as possible. One thing that might annoy players is that while you can replay any previously completed levels, it is impossible to skip ahead if you are stuck. However, as we mentioned earlier, the game is straightforward enough that anyone should be able to complete it without too much trouble.

Zenge runs on the Unity engine, so players are greeted by the usual launcher window for selecting the resolution and visual quality when launching the game. In-game, the only options are the ability to mute the music, sound effects, or both. The backgrounds for each level are simple gradients, as are the puzzle pieces until they are connected to reveal the story artwork. The game also features a relaxing piano-heavy soundtrack, and while there are not many tunes, they provide some nice background music for the puzzles. Everything in Zenge is mouse-controlled, so pieces are moved around by clicking on them and sliding them along a straight path to where you want them to go. Clicking on a shape highlights where it needs to be on the board, which is a handy feature on some of the more cluttered levels.

All in all, there is very little to complain about with Zenge. It’s a very short game with a reasonable price tag and plenty of relaxing puzzles. Serious puzzle fans should be able to complete it in one or two sessions, but it makes for a nice change of pace compared to some of the more convoluted puzzle titles on the market. If you are looking for a puzzle game that will seriously test your brainpower, Zenge is not it. However, if you want something simple, casual, and relaxing, then Zenge comes highly recommended.

Being a fan of EDM obviously helps, but the charming pixel art style visuals and relentless action is what kept us coming back for more. Gameplay: As simple as dodging bullets and grabbing coins. Graphics: Retina searing colors and flashes, but very nice overall. Sound: Your personal music taste will determine whether you like the Dubstep soundtrack or not.

These are not the first Star Wars themed tables by Zen Studios, but they are certainly some of the best. This time you get four tables instead of the usual three and each one of these offers hours of gameplay. With so much variety and great table themes in the set, it is hard to pick a favorite and I found myself bouncing back and forth between tables all the time. If you are a fan of pinball and love Star Wars then this is an essential purchase. Gameplay: Four Star Wars themed tables with great layouts. Graphics: Another excellent use of the license. Sound: Some of the speech snippets sound a bit "off," but overall it is a great effort.

The varied roster of interesting characters alone makes it hard to dislike Battle Fantasia –Revised Edition- and the newcomer friendly gameplay is also a plus. It doesn’t quite have the depth demanded by veterans and the pace is also considerably slower than other titles by Arc System Works, but it still has plenty to offer. It is a very accessible beat ‘em up and offers a great way for newcomers to dip their toes in the genre. Gameplay: The character roster is small, but the game is accessible enough for newcomers to jump in and have fun. Graphics: Although improved the visuals still show their age compared to more modern fighting games. Sound: The over the top Japanese voice acting fits the game perfectly and the background tunes are quite good too.

Tetris Effect is not just one of the best looking versions of the classic game, but also the most addictive. In addition to the stylish "Journey" mode, there are a host of other variations on the Tetris theme to keep you coming back for more. The audio and visual style of the game is superb and it is only the lack of direct multi-player modes that dampens the fun a bit. Even if you already own some version of Tetris this is one that you should not miss. Gameplay: Still a timeless classic. Graphics: Very trippy and hypnotic. Sound: Complements the puzzle action nicely.

Toren

Toren is an ambitious and enjoyable debut title from Swordtales that will appeal to fans of the genre. The visuals lack polish in certain areas and the controls can be clunky, but ascending the tower and exploring the surreal dreams of the protagonist is quite a memorable experience. It is also a game that doesn't hold your hand or spell out everything for you, so be prepared to unravel its mysteries and metaphors on your own. Gameplay: There is not as much action as we expected, but there are still plenty of unique areas to explore and puzzles to solve. Graphics: The visuals can be rough around the edges, but they are vibrant, detailed, and often downright beautiful. Sound: Toren features a great soundtrack as well as good sound effects.
