It is hard not to crack a smile while knocking old people off their mobility scooters as you dodge U.F.Os and zombies in a bright, cartoony setting. It sounds horrifying, I know, but then again Coffin Dodgers is a game that doesn’t take itself very seriously. This kart racer is currently available on Steam Early Access and pits seven retirement village residents in a race to the death against the Grim Reaper himself.

Kart racers are incredibly entertaining if done right and the genre could do with a bit more representation on PC. The Early Access version we played offers a story mode where you take on death and your fellow retirees on tracks that span a village, town, farm and graveyard. Each area consists of three races and those unfortunate enough to end up in last place forfeits their soul to the Reaper. They don’t get to enjoy their eternal rest either as Death brings them back as zombies to race on his side. The story mode isn’t very long, but it is fast paced and entertaining. There is also still a final showdown against the Grim Reaper, which has not yet been added to the game yet.

In addition to the story mode, there are time trial and free roam modes, but sadly the multi-player modes have not yet been implemented in the build we played. Milky Tea Studios have promised online multi-player as well as a split screen local versus mode for the full release though. Weapons are an important aspect of the genre and Coffin Dodgers doesn’t disappoint. It features Uzis, missiles, oil and even a defibrillator with which to thwart your fellow racers. Characters are also equipped with melee weapons in the form of canes that can be charged up to knock nearby opponents clean off their mobility scooters. Thanks to the ragdoll physics these falls look extra painful.

The unique cast of characters include a retired Amish sheep farmer, mad scientist, former German Messerschmitt pilot and even an ex-centerfold model. Between races you can use the cash that you have earned to upgrade your scooter a bit. Everything from the engine and gearbox to body, basket and melee weapon can be improved if you have enough money. We really enjoyed the track designs in this game, but the visuals could do with a bit more work. Everything is colorful and cartoony, but somewhat lacking in detail, especially in comparison to the excellent promo art the game has.

Coffin Dodgers is already very enjoyable, but it is really going to be the multi-player modes that will make or break this game. Personally we would love to see the characters fleshed out a bit more and given their own unique abilities or stories as well as some more customization options. The game will also require a bit more polish before the full release, but so far it is looking very promising and it is already very entertaining.

This preview is based on the Beta V1.3.666.0.1 build of the game.

If you are looking for an action RPG that is fast, fun and doesn’t get bogged down in endless stats you will enjoy Victor Vran. It also looks like the developers are pulling out all the stops to make this a game that fans will enjoy and you can provide feedback or report bugs from within the game to help with the development. There has been some great role playing titles released for PC lately and Victor Vran is definitely shaping up to be one of them.

The Golf Club (HB Studios)

The Golf Club (HB Studios)

With Electronic Arts dominating the sports genre with their licensed titles I was surprised to see The Golf Club from HB Studios entering Steam Early Access a while back. The genre could definitely use some competition, but the question was whether anything would be able to match up to the might of Electronic Arts. I only had to play a few rounds in The Golf Club to find the answer.

Nom Nom Galaxy (Q-Games. Ltd.)

He who controls the soup controls the galaxy. That is why, as a worker for Soup Co. it is your mission to keep the soup flowing. It appears that the galaxy doesn't particularly care what the soup is made of either as you can slap together just about anything to make some. The local wildlife obviously objects violently to being turned into a soup and Soup Co. also has powerful rivals so you have your work cut out if you want to survive this cut-throat business.

Assetto Corsa (Kunos Simulazioni)

There is no shortage of racing games available for PC, so it requires something really special to get us excited about a new release. Assetto Corsa, the driving simulation from Kunos Simulazioni, not only got us excited but prompted us to buy a new racing wheel especially for the game. The best part is it is not even finished yet!

Fancy Skulls (Tequibo)

Fancy Skulls (Tequibo)

Seeing how modern shooter are either heavily scripted or skewed towards multi-player gaming, it is refreshing to find something like Fancy Skulls. This Unity powered first person shooter throws you into a world with procedurally generated levels and surreal enemies plus the threat of permanent death hanging over your character. It makes for a challenging experience, but one that changes each time you play, so you will find yourself coming back for more.

Crest (Eat Create Sleep)

Crest (Eat Create Sleep)

Mention the words “god game” and chances are players will immediately think about either Populous or Black & White. There have been others of course, but these two titles exemplify what people typically expect of the genre. It is also a very niche genre, but now developers, Eat Create Sleep, have stepped up with their take on things. Their credentials include the free ecosystem simulator, Among Ripples, which is also a very unique title, but Crest raises the stakes by putting you in charge of guiding humanity.

I will probably get this as soon as the multiplayer is added but the grafix worries me. The game almost looks like it was designed for phones and tablets and not pc.

It’s early access so I’m going to take a wait and see approach, but I like the idea of racing around with oaps as characters. Unless there is some type of cross platform multi-player with Android users in the pipeline the graphics could really do with an upgrade. Those textures look like something from the Playstation age.
