Kriophobia By Fira Soft

Kriophobia By Fira Soft

Kriophobia claims to be a new take on Survival Horror which, while inspired by the core concepts of the genre, isn’t afraid to pull out a few surprises. The game made it through the Steam Greenlight process in only 13 days, but its Kickstarter campaign could do with a lot more attention. The game will allow players to take control of a geologist named Anna who got herself stuck on an island in northern Russia. Her study of seismic activity brought her to this remote area, but it is a solitude that she has sought out herself. It would appear that Anna is haunted by events from her past which is why she shuns civilization. However, when she falls into a sealed military complex by accident Anna has to save her colleagues while also confronting whatever it is lurking in the dark

Loren The Amazon Princess + The Castle Of N’mar DLC

Loren The Amazon Princess + The Castle Of N’mar DLC

The storyline in Loren the Amazon Princess really sucked me in and the cast of memorable characters kept me hooked. The turn based combat also turned out to be surprisingly fun and the game has a ton of replay value. Hopefully with the Steam release the game will receive the attention that it deserves and open the flood gates for more Winter Wolves titles.

Gameplay: A very nice fusion of visual novel and role playing.

Graphics: Although there is no animation the artwork is beautiful.

Sound: Good sound effects and some very memorable tunes

Mechs & Mercs – Black Talons (Camel 101)

Mechs & Mercs – Black Talons (Camel 101)

With games such as Mechs & Mercs: Black Talons from Camel 101 looming on the horizon it would seem that 2015 is going to be another bumper year for gaming. I certainly can’t think of a much better way to kick things off than a real-time strategy game featuring mercenaries and giant mechs. Set to release early in January, Mechs & Mercs aims to offer an extensive campaign mode where players get to take control of the Black Talons mercenary company

The Marvellous Miss Take

The Marvellous Miss Take

You might be playing as a trio of thieves in The Marvellous Miss Take, but don’t expect shadowy corners and stealth kills. Instead, the game challenges you to get the job done as quickly as possible and without being able to resort to any violent means. A nice selection of gadgets offers some help, but the random guard patrols, the abundance of security cameras, and dogs that can track your sent means even the best plans can quickly go awry. It is a challenging title, so expect to spend some time if you want to conquer all its missions fully.

Gameplay: This game features much more action than stealth, and it will appeal to players who don’t have the patience to lurk in the shadows while memorizing guard patterns.

Graphics: The visuals are colorful, well-animated, and very charming.

Sound: There is no voice acting, but the soundtrack fits the action nicely

Aqua Kitty – Milk Mine Defender

Aqua Kitty – Milk Mine Defender

Aqua Kitty – Milk Mine Defender might look like a charming, casual game but it has the heart of an old school arcade shooter and will really test your skills. The hand drawn pixel art is beautiful and the whole experience is enhanced by the excellent chiptune soundtrack.

Gameplay: Retro style side scrolling action that packs quite a challenge.

Graphics: Beautiful hand drawn pixel art.

Sound: A rocking chiptune soundtrack that compliments the action nicely

Words for Evil

Words for Evil

Words for Evil impresses with its fast-paced gameplay, gorgeous pixel-art visuals, and a large cast of characters. The gameplay is geared more towards stringing together words as fast as possible instead of searching for the longest words, which makes for a more action-packed feel. Unfortunately, there is no multi-player mode, but the low price tag means this is an easy and worthwhile impulse buy for all logophiles.

Gameplay: The game is fast-paced and quite addictive.

Graphics: Words for Evil features beautiful pixel art visuals but does not support full-screen mode.

Sound: The soundtrack is catchy and very fitting

Deathtrap (NeocoreGames)

Deathtrap (NeocoreGames)

The tower defense sections of the Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing series by NeocoreGames might not have been the main focus of the games, but they were certainly a lot of fun. Deathtrap however reverses the formula by making the tower defense the main focus of the game and then layering on all kinds of action RPG goodness to make it even better. The end result is a highly addictive title with plenty of depth that will keep fans of both genres hooked

This War of Mine

This War of Mine

This War of Mine takes on a serious subject and manages to turn it into a great game without compromising the core message. War is hell and trying to survive it as a non-combatant is something that nobody should ever have to experience in real life. The game offers a glimpse into the trials and tribulations faced by ordinary people caught up in extraordinary circumstances. It is a dark experience that will probably not appeal to everyone, but once it sucks you into its bleak world it can be hard to leave until you have done all you could to save the people placed under your guidance.

Gameplay: Simple to control, but hard to master, this game will challenge you in more ways than one.

Graphics: The unique art style perfectly captures the bleak reality of being trapped in a hostile environment.

Sound: Fitting audio and outstanding sound effects

The Old City: Leviathan

The Old City: Leviathan

With a game such as The Old City: Leviathan where the story is such an important focus it can be hard to explain why it is worth experiencing without spoiling any surprises. The visuals are certainly very pretty and the audio very good, but by the developers own admission, everything is secondary to the story. The lack of interaction with the gameworld means that some players will dismiss this title as a “walking simulator”, but anyone that can appreciate the immersive experience instead of trying to compare it to something else will find a lot to love about it.

Gameplay: Plenty of exploring to do, but the focus is squarely on the intriguing story.

Graphics: The Unreal engine is put to good use to display some detailed environments.

Sound: Quality voice acting and a haunting soundtrack that matches the melancholic atmosphere of the game
