Neon Chrome

Neon Chrome

Pick a clone and battle through the many floors of a skyscraper to reach the top and take down the evil Overseer in this top-down roguelike shooter. Players must deal with everything from assault drones and cyborgs to military robots and security guards, but fortunately, there’s plenty of firepower to unlock and cybernetic enhancements that can make the job easier. Neon Chrome features plenty of action, but the procedural levels can begin to look too similar after a while and the boss battles are somewhat uninspiring. Nevertheless, blowing up almost everything in sight while upgrading weapons and picking perks is a lot of fun and the game has plenty of replay value.

Gameplay: Battle through procedural levels while collecting loot and unlocking new weapons and perks.

Graphics: The visuals look good and the game fully embraces its cyberpunk aesthetic, but levels look very similar after a while.

Sound: The synthesizer-heavy soundtrack and combination of gunshots and explosions enhance the experience

Nex Machina

Nex Machina

Nex Machina is an intense twin-stick shooter that is challenging yet accessible. While the game only features six worlds, it has plenty of modes to lure players back in. The action is over the top, and once players learn how to increase their score multiplier and string together combos for rescuing humans, the real fun begins. Unsurprisingly for a game that benefited from the input of Eugene Jarvis, Nex Machina is a blast to play from start to finish and definitely scratches that old-school shooter itch.

Gameplay: The game can be unforgiving, but players willing to get good are in for a blast.

Graphics: The voxel visuals and great use of color make Nex Machina a good-looking game.

Sound: The soundtrack is a great match for the arcade-style action, and the announcer is a nice throwback to the arcade days

Demon’s Crystals

Demon’s Crystals

Take control of one of four Urican demons and blast away enemies in this twin-stick shooter. Unfortunately, the colorful visuals and non-stop action cannot hide how shallow the gameplay is and how repetitive everything becomes after only a few rounds. The inclusion of local co-op and multiplayer modes adds some fun to the game, but there are much better options available for this genre.

Gameplay: Action-packed, but very repetitive and grindy.

Graphics: Colorful, but sometimes too chaotic for its own good.

Sound: Very average

AIPD – Artificial Intelligence Police Department

AIPD – Artificial Intelligence Police Department

For an action-packed, neon-fueled arcade shooter, look no further than AIPD. Despite the intriguing title, the game does not have a story-driven campaign mode but has tons of action. The number of enemy and arena permutations on offer also gives it more replay value than typical arcade shooters. Best of all, it features a four-player local coop mode, which is as fun as it is chaotic.

Gameplay: AIPD features plenty of addictive old-school shooting action.

Graphics: The 80s neon glow art style has been done before, but it still looks great.

Sound: Features a nice electronic soundtrack and solid sound effects

Pulstar

Pulstar

Pulstar is a very straightforward arcade shooter so depending on your taste you will either find it a refreshing blast from the past or become frustrated after only a few minutes. It definitely packs quite a challenge and the difficulty ramps up very quickly, so quick reflexes and a bit of luck is required to make the most of it. If you enjoyed games like Geometry Wars and Beat Hazard you will have fun with Pulstar.

Gameplay: Straightforward and challenging arcade shooter.

Graphics: Nice, but it can be hard to distinguish the enemies from the background at times.

Sound: The sound effects lack punch, but the music is very catchy
