PoPoLoCrois

PoPoLoCrois

There is a lot on offer here and this is the first time that the series hits western shores, but unless you are a hardcore fan of Japanese role playing games you can safely give this one a miss. The visuals are dated, the gameplay very generic and the amount of random encounters coupled with the loading times makes this game a chore to play at times.

Gameplay: Dated and bogged down by long load times and plenty of random encounters.

Graphics: Definitely very retro.

Sound: Very average

Retro Atari Classics

Retro Atari Classics

Not a bad bunch of titles, but the “remixed” visuals is a joke and the touch-screen controls are not not all they could have been. If you are a retro fan, chances are you’ll have most of these titles already so all in all this is a compilation that can be safely ignored.

Gameplay: Some games are more fun than others, but overall the quality is a bit rough.

Graphics: Whoever thought that getting graffiti artists to do the “remixed” graphics made a terrible mistake.

Sound: Faithful to the originals at least

The Wardrobe

The Wardrobe

The Wardrobe isn’t the easiest of point & click adventures, but it is very entertaining and clearly made by people who love the genre. As Skinny the skeleton, you must navigate a neighborhood filled with crazy characters in an effort to save your friend’s soul from eternal damnation. The game sports some some beautifully detailed visuals and every scene is filled with references and homages to pop culture. If you fondly remember titles such as Day of The Tentacle, Sam & Max, and Discworld, then The Wardrobe should not be missed.

Gameplay: Feels like a classic point & click adventure, complete with the high difficulty of the puzzles.

Graphics: Beautiful and detailed visuals that are hand illustrated and digitally colored.

Sounds: Nice tunes and decent voice acting

Virtua Fighter 4

Virtua Fighter 4

Virtua Fighter 4 is aimed squarely at the hardcore fighting brigade so if you do not have the time and patience to devote to this game you will not get your money’s worth. It seems to be a bit more accessible than previous entries, but is unlikely to wow fans of Tekken and Soul Calibur.

Gameplay: A beat ’em up where the focus is purely on the fighting and not the story or other bonus thrills.

Graphics: Pretty good considering its age.

Sound: A mixed bag, but not bad overall

Still Life

Still Life

If you like murder mysteries and you enjoy point & click adventures then you should have fun with this one. A bit obscure at times and not exactly the most cheerful subject matter but still worth playing through.

Gameplay: A bit slow paced & frustrating at times but has it’s moments.

Graphics: Not outstanding but for the genre it’s not too shabby.

Sound: Decent voice overs and nice music

Parasite Eve II

Parasite Eve II

Parasite Eve 2 is a interesting mix of survival horror and role playing elements. It features an interesting storyline and the parasite energies adds a unique flavor to the combat.

Gameplay: Disturbingly good fun.

Graphics: Very good for the system.

Sound: Worth cranking up

Dynasty Warriors

Dynasty Warriors

There’s definitely a lot of fun to be had here if you are a fan of the genre but ultimately the game becomes very repetitive. A Dynasty Warriors game on a portable console is undeniably impressive, but the fogging and slowdown undermine the experience. You’ll have fun with this game, but it’s best played in short bursts.

Gameplay: The hacking and slashing is fun initially, but soon becomes repetitive.

Graphics: Not bad, but hampered by lots of fog and some extreme slowdown.

Sound: Nice guitar riffs but no speech

Zombie Runaway

Zombie Runaway

Running and jumping games are fairly common on Android devices so if you are tired of the genre, it is unlikely that Zombie Runaway will have much to offer you. The basic idea of running in a straight line, collecting coins and dodging tombstones is simple but addictive and I found myself constantly trying to beat my own high-score. The game is free so it is worth checking out.

Gameplay: A simple game with some nice ideas.

Graphics: Not bad.

Sound: Only one tune that will drive everyone around you crazy

QUAKE

QUAKE

Every bit as playable as when it first came out Quake is a true classic and, while the plot might be non-existent, the action is non-stop. It also has enough mods and patches to keep you busy for a long, long time.

Gameplay: Fast & frantic.

Graphics: Pretty dated but there’s enough mods and updates to make it look very decent.

Sound: Creepy sound effects and spooky ambience

Sakura Agent

Sakura Agent

Akira took the job working for a mysterious agency because it gave him the opportunity for free trips around the world and meeting women. However, despite his high success rate, he is on the verge of getting kicked out due to his antics. He has the opportunity to prove himself though when an influx of other-dimensional beings start making a nuisance of themselves. Sakura Agent is a typical Winged Cloud visual novel with plenty of scantily clad women, comical situations and a paper thin plot. If you are a fan of the genre and the developer you’ll enjoy the game, but everyone else will probably find it a little lacking.

Gameplay: Humorous characters and situations, but the story isn’t exactly engaging.

Graphics: Beautiful character designs, but far too few backgrounds.

Sound: The music is unremarkable while the sound effects and voice acting are non existent
