Unrest

Unrest

If you value interesting dialogue and moral choices more than loot gathering and monster slaying then you will enjoy Unrest. The game dares to do things a bit differently and for the most it works quite well. The lack of puzzles or any real combat means that the pace of the game is very slow, but just like a good book you will want to know what is going to happen next once you are hooked.

Gameplay: The focus is very much on the story, so action junkies might become bored of all the reading.

Graphics: The hand-painted visuals give the game an unique look.

Sound: Outstanding tunes, but no speech

Super Comboman

Super Comboman

Super Comboman contains some great ideas, but is let down by less than stellar gameplay. Games such as Guacamelee! and Aces Wild have already demonstrated how great titles in the platform brawling genre can be, but Super Comboman doesn’t quite live up to expectations. The controls are the biggest source of frustration and the steep difficulty curve also feels more like a punishment than a challenge.

Gameplay: Lots of potential, but let down by frustrating controls and a steep difficulty curve.
Graphics: The sticker style visuals is an interesting and unique choice.
Sound: Not bad, but a little repetitive

Commando Jack

Commando Jack

There is a lot to like about Commando Jack, but the fact that it is a straight mobile port without any enhancements does mean it will be overlooked by some players. The gameplay still shines though and there is a very enjoyable campaign to complete. The game might be free on mobile devices, but in this PC version you have everything at your disposal without any in-app purchases required. If you value gameplay over visuals and enjoy the genre give Commando Jack a shot.

Gameplay: Straightforward tower defence gameplay with the ability to fight back in first person as well.

Graphics: Clearly a mobile port, but not without charm.

Sound: Catchy tunes that complement the action

WazHack

WazHack

Wazhack is a game that kept us busy for hours, most of which was spent dying and retrying. It is a very difficult game, but with a good strategy and plenty of luck you will get far. The permanent death ensures that you stay on your toes at all times, and the procedural levels ensure plenty of replay value. There is also a wealth of characters to choose from, each with their own unique skills and weaknesses.

Gameplay: A strategic dungeon crawler, that is tough as nails, but very rewarding.

Graphics: The rendered backgrounds and 3D character models make for an interesting mix.

Sound: Subtle enough that you can play the game for hours without the music becoming annoying

Epic Defense: The Elements

Epic Defense: The Elements

I must admit that Epic Defense caught me by surprise with how addictive it is. It is a pretty straight forward tower defense game but the random nature of the gem drops and the different types of towers make for an challenging experience. There are plenty of free ways to generate coins but it just never seems to be enough. Still for a free game you can’t go wrong with this one.

Gameplay: Very addictive but can become time consuming and a bit of a grind.
Graphics: Colorful and detailed even on small screens.
Sound: Nothing amazing here but not bad overall

The Waste Land

The Waste Land

The Waste Land is a great entry in the genre and while it is not without its flaws has plenty to offer fans. The gameworld is absolutely huge and the retro inspired visuals are spot on. There are also plenty of enemies to battle as well as huge bosses that take some skill to take down. The open world design is great for players who want to forge their own routes through the game, but can be confusing to those who don’t. Some areas, such as the combat, could have been made more engaging, but fans of the genre will still find plenty to enjoy.

Graphics: Imaginative, gory and very true to the 8-bit titles from which it draws inspiration.

Sound: Some nice tunes, but they repeat way too often which causes repetition.

Gameplay: Challenging and entertaining, but could have been a little more rewarding

UpperCup Football

UpperCup Football

It is hard to believe that a game where you only use one button can be this much fun, but UpperCup Football proves that it is possible. The beautiful visuals will draw you in and the addictive gameplay will keep you coming back for more. There is just so much variety in the teams and matches that you will want to keep playing just to see who you are up against next. UpperCup Football is definitely one of my favourite Android titles and one that will remain on my tablet for quite some time.

Gameplay: Very entertaining and incredibly addictive.

Graphics: Beautiful pixel art with tons of variety.

Sound: Catchy tunes and great sound effects

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

Combining one of the best RPG developers out there with one of the hottest licences you can get was always going to result in something spectacular and KOTOR does not dissapoint. With memorable characters and settings, a gripping storyline and engrossing gameply this is a must have title for RPG fans and Star Wars fans alike.

Gameplay: Very enjoyable and deeply engrossing.
Graphics: Some awesome locations and spectacular light saber battles.
Sound: Good voice acting and great music

Kana: Little Sister

Kana: Little Sister

Don’t play Kana: Little Sister if you expect a typical Hentei game and don’t play it if you are not a fan of reading and drama. If you can appreciate a good story with well written characters and a lot of heart ache then I can’t recommend this game enough. It’s definitely one of the crowning achievements in its genre.

Gameplay: It’s a visual novel so the gameplay consists of lots of clicking with the occasional multiple choice question.
Graphics: Nicely drawn characters but the focus is firmly on the story.
Sound: Minimal sound effects, no voices but touching music

Dogfighter

Dogfighter

Its always good to go into a game with no expectations and be pleasantly surprised. Dogfighter is a highly addictive experience that will have you chasing rankings and achievements long into the night. A great game from a great indie developer.

Gameplay: All the fun and maddness of a first person shooter but with added dimensions.
Graphics: Stylish & detailed.
Sound: Good sound effects but the limited music gets a bit repetitive
