Layers of Fear

Layers of Fear

With its surreal setting and constantly shifting rooms Layers of Fear is a game that is both immersive and captivating. It loves messing with your perception, but also features enough jump scares to keep you on edge all the time. Unless you take the time to explore your surroundings and uncover the clues you’ll miss out on most of the story elements, so it is not a game to rush through. Thanks to its beautiful visuals and excellent audio it is definitely a cut above similar titles in the genre.

Gameplay: Minimal puzzles, but simply exploring the surreal setting of the game is a nerve wracking experience.

Graphics: Very polished and highly detailed.

Sound: Quiet when it needs to be, but also very effective at using audio to unnerve players

GUILTY GEAR Xrd -SIGN-

GUILTY GEAR Xrd -SIGN-

With its crazy cast of characters, baffling storyline and perplexing amount of technical terms Guilty Gear Xrd can be a little daunting at first, but a comprehensive tutorial will ease you into things. After mastering the basics you’ll find a ton of modes to try out whether you want to take on the computer, your friends or random strangers on the internet. The visuals are excellent, the audio incredible and the gameplay very entertaining, which makes it an all-round great game. It also features enough content, including a lengthy story, to keep you busy for ages.

Gameplay: Plenty of depth for veterans, but thanks to the tutorial it is also very accessible for newcomers.

Graphics: The perfect fusion of 3D graphics and 2D style.

Sound: The soundtrack is rocking and the voice acting great

NEKOPARA Vol. 2

NEKOPARA Vol. 2

NEKOPARA Vol. 2 once again demonstrates why this series has such a loyal and fanatical following. The artwork by Sayori is as beautiful as always and the animations for the characters continue to impress. The story is still quite lighthearted, but focusses on slightly more serious issues compared to Vol. 1. The Steam version is once again censored, but comes with a lower price point, while the uncensored version cost a bit more, but features plenty of animated H-scenes.

Gameplay: It is a kinetic novel, so there are no branching routes or choices to be made.

Graphics: Stunning artwork and great animations.

Sound: The voice acting is very good and so is the music although most of the tracks will be familiar

Hero Defense – Haunted Island (Happy Tuesday)

Hero Defense – Haunted Island (Happy Tuesday)

Grab your crossbow and put on your garlic aftershave because it is time to hunt things that go bump in the night again. This time the opportunity to thin out the freaks comes courtesy of Hero Defense – Haunted Island from Happy Tuesday. The most powerful vampire in the world, Count Necrosis, is making a menace of himself and his brethren, so you must gather your merry team of slayers to take him down. While this sounds like the perfect setup for some good old fashioned role playing, Hero Defense is actually a tower defense title

Pixel Puzzles 2: Space

Pixel Puzzles 2: Space

Pixel Puzzles 2: Space retains all the elements that made the previous titles so much fun, but continues to refine the successful formula. The interface is better than ever before and the ability to tackle any puzzle without unlocking is also very welcome. The space theme is yet another great match for the genre and once again there are hours of addictive fun to be had with this title. If you are a fan of jigsaw puzzles then this is not to be missed.

Gameplay: Same great jigsaw puzzle gameplay, but with an improved interface.

Graphics: Casual enough to work on virtually any hardware, but the space theme is great.

Sound: Unobtrusive and very relaxing

Deliver Us The Moon by KeokeN Interactive

Deliver Us The Moon by KeokeN Interactive

Open world games are rather common these days, all vying to outdo each other in terms of scale and content, but not many literally promise you the moon. Deliver Us The Moon, from Dutch developers KeokeN Interactive, casually mentions “open world lunar exploration” as a feature, which should be enough to get any science fiction fan salivating. The game casts players in the role of a rogue astronaut who is sent to the moon on a secret mission to save humanity from extinction

Mercedes-Benz DLC Now Available For Car Mechanic Simulator 2015

Mercedes-Benz DLC Now Available For Car Mechanic Simulator 2015

Players who like to get their hands (digitally) dirty while expanding their auto repair service empire will already be very familiar with Car Mechanic Simulator 2015. The developers have not been resting on their laurels after the release of this title though and have since created a couple of downloadable content packs for the game. The latest addition to the roster is also one of the most exciting as it is the first official, branded DLC for the game and features the prestigious Mercedes-Benz brand

Kindred Spirits on the Roof

Kindred Spirits on the Roof

Enoki Sachi and Nagatani Megumi are two ghosts who want to consummate their relationship, but to do so they want to observe other female couples to figure out what exactly it entails. Since Toomi Yuna is the only person at the Girl’s Academy who can see the two restless spirits it becomes her task to turn the school into a “yuritopia.” While the story might not sound like it leaves room for a lot of depth the game is surprisingly entertaining and treats the subject matter with more care and respect than most other titles. There’s plenty of funny moments too and a great cast of characters who you end up really caring for.

Gameplay: It is a kinetic novel, so you cannot really influence the story, but there is a lot of content.

Graphics: It’s a pity the resolution is so low, but the art style is quite beautiful.

Sound: Voice acting is restricted to important scenes only, but the quality is good and the soundtrack is great

Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles

Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles

Having to unlock the best game in the compilation (imo) sucks but for the rest this is a great compilation and really a slice of history as well. Castlevania fans should be in seventh heaven with this title and all platform fans should pray for more releases of this quality.

Gameplay: Tough as nails but well worth persevering as the rewards are good.

Graphics: The remake is looking good and SOTN is still awesome.

Sound: Good music is synonymous with Castlevania games

Borderlands: The Zombie Island Of Dr. Ned

Borderlands: The Zombie Island Of Dr. Ned

The Zombie Island Of Dr. Ned is a good example of how to do DLC properly. With some nice new areas, a new visual palette and an interesting storyline this should definitely not be missed. Zombies have been done to death before (pun intended) but Borderlansd proves that there is still some life left in the undead.

Gameplay: A tighter story and lots of zombie killing action.

Graphics: A completely new look and feel for the game.

Sound: Good but would have liked to hear some new battle cries
