Spooky Bonus

Developer: Grey Alien Games | Publisher: Grey Alien Games | Release Date: 2015 | Genre: Casual / Match 3 | Website: Official Website | Purchase: Steam

Dark forces are emanating from the heart of Old Town and only your Match-3 puzzle skills can save the day. Spooky Bonus is not a new game as it dates back to 2013, but its Steam arrival is just in time for Halloween. Players who have not yet experience the Halloween-themed delights of this game when launched on all the casual portals can now join in on the fun. Spread across 100 unique levels, Spooky Bonus challenges you to match ghoulish items while earning coins to purchase spooky accessories for your house and yard.

While the game sticks to the tried and tested Match-3 formula it is a great example of how to present a casual title that is accessible and entertaining. The level designs are good and provide a challenge without ever becoming frustrating. The game can also be played in “Relaxed” or “Timed” game modes, the latter providing experienced players with a bigger challenge. Your goals differ from each level, but it usually boils down to matching three or more items of the same type to clear them from the board. Sticking with the Halloween theme of the game all the items on the board are ghosts, black cats, witch hats, candles, coffins and other spooky things.

The challenge gradually ramps up, so eventually you will not only have to make a certain amount of item matches, but also clear all the gold tiles or drop the large skulls off the board. Gold tiles are cleared simply by making matches with the items on them, but sooner or later you will also encounter stone blocks that can only be broken by making a match next to them and spider webs that require a match made with the tokens trapped inside them to clear.

Although you will be doing mostly the same thing on each level the layout of each board is different, which means you need to adapt your strategy. When playing the “Relaxed” mode you can still get away with making aimless matches until you complete the board, but on the “Timed” mode the power-ups are essential. Power-ups are obtained by matching four or more items and can be a big help. From lighting that hits and clear random tiles to flashlights and silver bullets that can clear entire rows, the power-ups are as useful as they are flashy. During levels you will also earn coins that can be used between levels to buy spooky accessories for your house and yard. These accessories are actually the way in which you unlock new abilities, power-ups and upgrades for the levels.

Despite its age the visuals and presentation for Spooky Bonus held up very well and the game still looks great for a casual title. The graphics are very colorful and everything is polished to perfection. Although the playing area is set within a square block, the game at least features a background for the borders to keep things looking nice on widescreen monitors. Incidentally, the different backgrounds that represent the areas in the game, such as the prison, madhouse, old church, ghostly lake and more, are nicely drawn and can even be used as desktop wallpapers as a reward for completing the levels. The classical music is suitably atmospheric for a Halloween themed title and the game also features plenty of clear sound effects. Since everything is mouse controlled the game is very easy to play and it was built exclusively for PC and Mac, so it is not a mobile port.

In total it took us about 11 hours to complete all 100 levels of Spooky Bonus while playing in “Timed” mode. Some of the levels took two tries to complete, but overall the difficulty level is not very high. Since the game automatically saves your progress when you exit it is a great title for playing when you have a few minutes to spare and just want to zone out while relaxing. Spooky Bonus offers an addictive Match-3 puzzle experience without watering things down with pointless mini-games or other distractions. If you are a fan of the genre and have not yet played this game we can definitely recommend it.

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition

Ori and the Blind Forest immediately catches the eye with its hand-painted visual style, but beneath all the visual gloss beats the fiendish heart of a platformer. Exploring the vibrant game world is a joy, but the occasional spike in difficulty can also cause some frustration. The game's Definitive Edition comes with plenty of enhancements and improvements that make an already great game even better. If you are a fan of the genre and up for the challenge, then you won't be disappointed with Ori and the Blind Forest. Gameplay: The game doesn't veer too far off from what is standard for the genre, but it is a lot of fun to play. Graphics: The art style of Ori and the Blind Forest is downright beautiful. Sound: The game features a very fitting orchestral soundtrack.

Always Remember Me

Always Remember Me

Always Remember Me has the distinction of being the first Otome Game on Steam, so how much you enjoy it will depend very much on whether you like the genre or not. The story is interesting, but the focus is more on training stats which can result in repetition, especially after multiple playthroughs. For an older game, Always Remember Me still holds up well and it is quite a relaxing experience, so if you are in the mood for something different it is worth seeking out. Gameplay: The focus is more on juggling stats than interacting with the characters. Graphics: The artwork still holds up well. Sound: The soundtrack is decent, but the speech snippets can start to become repetitive.

The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker

The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker

The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker is an FMV game where you get to play as a psychiatrist questioning a host of patients about their problems and the murder of your predecessor. This is all done via a keyword based text input, but the high definition, full screen video responses will quickly draw you into the mystery. Add in some superb acting along with a genuinely fascinating story and you are looking at a surprisingly good title. It’s not perfect and the genre obviously has a lot of limitations, but overall this is one not to be missed. Gameplay: The keyword based questioning obviously has some limitations, but makes for an engrossing experience. Graphics: The quality of the full motion video responses are very good. Sound: Features an atmospheric soundtrack and the quality of the acting is also of a very high standard.

Roundabout

Roundabout

Roundabout is a game about traversing narrow city streets to get your passengers to their destination. The catch is that your limousine constantly rotates, so good timing is required to avoid hitting obstacles and blowing up. It is a very short game, but lots of fun, and the cheesy FMV scenes must be seen to be believed. The game is also very forgiving, so anyone should be able to enjoy it despite the challenging concept. Gameplay: Requires timing and patience, but successfully dodging obstacles is very satisfying. Graphics: Not spectacular, but colorful and charming. Sound: The soundtrack is very fitting, as is the unconvincing voice-acting

Chime

Chime

It is a pity that Chime does not have more songs and levels as the game is extremely addictive. It plays like a cross between Tetris and Lumines, but is unique enough to keep you hooked. The audio plays a big role in the game and features tracks from some famous artists so this is a great title to add to your library. Gameplay: Simple but very addictive. Graphics: Simple but stylish. Sound: Tightly integrated with the gameplay.

Sakura Spirit

Sakura Spirit

Sakura Spirit features some very nice visuals, but despite an interesting setup the plot never really goes anywhere. The lack of animations or poses are also very noticeable, although the CGs are very good. The nudity that is included in the game definitely leans more towards the ecchi side of the scale and not hentai, which might be a letdown for fans of the genre. There are better visual novels available, but hopefully Winged Cloud learns from their mistakes, as there are not many Western developers who bother making these titles. Gameplay: The story is rather short and not very engaging. Graphics: Very detailed and features nice character designs, but the amount of outfits and poses are lacking. Sound: The soundtrack is nice, but the game features no speech.
