Aqua Kitty – Milk Mine Defender

Aqua Kitty – Milk Mine Defender

Aqua Kitty – Milk Mine Defender might look like a charming, casual game but it has the heart of an old school arcade shooter and will really test your skills. The hand drawn pixel art is beautiful and the whole experience is enhanced by the excellent chiptune soundtrack.

Gameplay: Retro style side scrolling action that packs quite a challenge.

Graphics: Beautiful hand drawn pixel art.

Sound: A rocking chiptune soundtrack that compliments the action nicely

Words for Evil

Words for Evil

Words for Evil impresses with its fast-paced gameplay, gorgeous pixel-art visuals, and a large cast of characters. The gameplay is geared more towards stringing together words as fast as possible instead of searching for the longest words, which makes for a more action-packed feel. Unfortunately, there is no multi-player mode, but the low price tag means this is an easy and worthwhile impulse buy for all logophiles.

Gameplay: The game is fast-paced and quite addictive.

Graphics: Words for Evil features beautiful pixel art visuals but does not support full-screen mode.

Sound: The soundtrack is catchy and very fitting

Deathtrap (NeocoreGames)

Deathtrap (NeocoreGames)

The tower defense sections of the Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing series by NeocoreGames might not have been the main focus of the games, but they were certainly a lot of fun. Deathtrap however reverses the formula by making the tower defense the main focus of the game and then layering on all kinds of action RPG goodness to make it even better. The end result is a highly addictive title with plenty of depth that will keep fans of both genres hooked

From The Depths (Brilliant Skies Ltd.)

From The Depths (Brilliant Skies Ltd.)

Sitting down to play From the Depths for the first time is quite a daunting experience. I followed the advice of Nick Smart, the developer, and checked out the tutorial video first, but my first few hours with the game mostly consisted of playing tutorial missions and messing about in the vehicle designer. There are a lot of hand holding and step by step instructions for the tutorials, but From the Depths is a very complicated game and it takes time, not to mention patience, before everything start to make sense

I Am Bread

I Am Bread

As if creating one of the most maddeningly entertaining surgical “simulation” titles we’ve ever played wasn’t enough, the fine folks over at Bossa Studios have now turned their attention to bread. According to the developers, I Am Bread is “the beautiful story of one slice of bread’s epic and emotional journey as it embarks upon a quest to become toasted.” Apparently this will involve traversing the perils of a kitchen, lounge, bedroom and bathroom as a moving slice of bread

FOTONICA

FOTONICA

Static screenshots can’t really convey the look and feel of FOTONICA, as it is a game built around the concept of speed. The game boils down to a test of your reflexes as you must make split-second decisions about when and where to jump to keep running and building up speed. It is not a game for people seeking a storyline or in-depth gameplay, but you can’t go wrong with FOTONICA for quick arcade thrills.

Gameplay: All you have to do in the game is run, jump, repeat.

Graphics: The vector-style visuals certainly make for a unique look.

Sound: Atmospheric and provides a perfect match for the minimalistic visuals

The Sun and Moon

The Sun and Moon

Don’t let the simple visuals fool you, The Sun and Moon is a devious platform title with a very interesting ground diving mechanic. Being able to jump into the ground means you’ll have to approach platforming in a whole new manner and makes for a challenging, but addictive experience. In addition to the arresting gameplay the game features a nice soundtrack by Dubmood and very responsive controls that keeps you in control of the action at all times.

Gameplay: It takes a while to wrap your head around the ground diving mechanic, but it makes for a challenging experience.

Graphics: Very minimal, but ensures that the focus is on the action.

Sound: Some fitting tunes provided by Dubmood

Deadstone

Deadstone

There aren’t that many titles on PC in the top down shooter genre and even fewer that offers as much as Deadstone. It’s got a meaty campaign mode that can be enjoyed in a serious or light-hearted fashion as well as a very addictive survival mode. Throw in the co-op mode, which is unfortunately local only, and you have the recipe for a great game.

Graphics: The visual style of the game is a little dated and lacking in variety, but overall it’s quite polished.

Sound: Nice voice acting during the cut-scenes and the music fits the atmosphere of the game well.

Gameplay: Plenty of content and an addictive experience throughout despite the repetition

Master Reboot

Master Reboot

I did not know what to expect when I entered the world of Master Reboot and the game delighted in surprising me around every turn. Gameplay: Each memory offers new surprises and ways to play.

Graphics: The art style is very unique and features some breathtaking environments.

Sound: The audio compliments the atmosphere of the game nicely
