XBlaze Code: Embryo

XBlaze Code: Embryo

XBlaze: Code Embryo is set in the same universe as the BlazBlue fighting titles, but no prior knowledge is required to enjoy the story. The game features an intriguing storyline and multiple endings, but reading news articles to influence the path you take is a little confusing at first. Once you figure out the system, it is a lot of fun though, and the stylish visuals as well as great soundtrack make it easy to recommend.

Gameplay: A typical visual novel with a rather unusual system for choosing your path to the multiple endings.

Graphics: Not a lot of animation, but very detailed and colorful.

Sound: Plenty of music tracks and some great Japanese voice acting as well

Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto IV

Its hard not to harbor some resentment for the delay and lesser port that PC owners have received with this game, but at the end of the day it’s still a lot of fun to play and a great game. As long as you can look past the technical issues that is.

Gameplay: The technical issues and more “mature” feel detracts a bit from the gameplay but it’s still good.

Graphics: With the right hardware this game looks stunning.

Sound: Decent voice acting and loads of good tunes

Layers of Fear

Layers of Fear

With its surreal setting and constantly shifting rooms Layers of Fear is a game that is both immersive and captivating. It loves messing with your perception, but also features enough jump scares to keep you on edge all the time. Unless you take the time to explore your surroundings and uncover the clues you’ll miss out on most of the story elements, so it is not a game to rush through. Thanks to its beautiful visuals and excellent audio it is definitely a cut above similar titles in the genre.

Gameplay: Minimal puzzles, but simply exploring the surreal setting of the game is a nerve wracking experience.

Graphics: Very polished and highly detailed.

Sound: Quiet when it needs to be, but also very effective at using audio to unnerve players

Deliver Us The Moon by KeokeN Interactive

Deliver Us The Moon by KeokeN Interactive

Open world games are rather common these days, all vying to outdo each other in terms of scale and content, but not many literally promise you the moon. Deliver Us The Moon, from Dutch developers KeokeN Interactive, casually mentions “open world lunar exploration” as a feature, which should be enough to get any science fiction fan salivating. The game casts players in the role of a rogue astronaut who is sent to the moon on a secret mission to save humanity from extinction

Kindred Spirits on the Roof

Kindred Spirits on the Roof

Enoki Sachi and Nagatani Megumi are two ghosts who want to consummate their relationship, but to do so they want to observe other female couples to figure out what exactly it entails. Since Toomi Yuna is the only person at the Girl’s Academy who can see the two restless spirits it becomes her task to turn the school into a “yuritopia.” While the story might not sound like it leaves room for a lot of depth the game is surprisingly entertaining and treats the subject matter with more care and respect than most other titles. There’s plenty of funny moments too and a great cast of characters who you end up really caring for.

Gameplay: It is a kinetic novel, so you cannot really influence the story, but there is a lot of content.

Graphics: It’s a pity the resolution is so low, but the art style is quite beautiful.

Sound: Voice acting is restricted to important scenes only, but the quality is good and the soundtrack is great

Assassin’s Creed III

Assassin’s Creed III

While the lead character, Conner, is not quite as charismatic or interesting as his predecessor, Ezio, the game is definitely not lacking in ambition. While it is the largest entry in the series to date, it can get bogged down in all kinds of menial tasks. The story is interesting and Desmond finally has his chance to shine but the story feels overly scripted with little of the freedom that the series was based on.

Gameplay: Large and varied but less focussed than previous installments.

Graphics: Beautiful in places but the setting is rather drab.

Sound: Quality audio and effects

LEGO Batman

LEGO Batman

Lego Batman: The Videogame is not something you are going to bust out to show off the power of your console but it is a fun game that packs a lot of content. Traveler’s Tales has done a good job with the license and the game has something for players both young and old.

Gameplay: Suffers from some monotony but there’s a lot of content here.

Graphics: Surprisingly good although it’s not cutting edge.

Sound: Grunts, yells and laughs mixed in with the classic Batman theme

Dominique Pamplemousse

Dominique Pamplemousse

Dominique Pamplemousse is not the best looking or sounding game available but it has a lot of heart a pretty unique experience to offer. It tackles some interesting topics in a unique manner and packs some nice twists in its short playtime. When judged purely as a game it is a little lacking but as an experience it is quite good.

Gameplay: Film noir style point & click adventure.

Graphics: A mixture of claymation and homemade props.

Sound: The singing might not appeal to everyone

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon

Circle Of The Moon is a great start to the series on Gameboy Advance and has plenty of fun to offer. There are some small annoyances that drag it down but nothing too serious and while it doesn’t eclipse Symphony Of The Night it is still a very worthy game.

Gameplay: Similar to Symphony Of The Night but a lot harder with some very unfair sections.

Graphics: Nice as far as Gameboy Advance games go but a bit dark and could do with more animations.

Sound: Does not disappoint

Assassin’s Creed® Revelations

Assassin’s Creed® Revelations

While not quite the “revelation” that I was hoping for, this game does tie up the stories of Altair and Ezio. Not much has changed gameplay wise and the story is not the best in the series but the game is still very entertaining. It is definitely not for newcomers to the series as the story is a direction continuation of Brotherhood but it does fill the gap until Assassin’s Creed 3.

Gameplay: Pretty much the same as Brotherhood.

Graphics: Not bad but the colours are a bit dull.

Sound: Good voice acting and atmospheric music
