Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Uncharted 2 improves on just about every aspect of the original game to deliver one of the best action experiences on the PS3. The locations are exotic and varied, the enemies cunning and the dialogue great. Virtually every single chapter has a stand out moment that will leave you slack jawed with amazement. Definitely one of the finest games on the system.

Gameplay: The perfect mix of action and adventure.

Graphics: A showcase of what the PS3 can deliver.

Sound: Great voice acting and excellent music

Concursion

Concursion

Concursion is definitely a game that will defy expectations. It is not as straightforward as it first appears and the way that five different genres have been combined seamlessly is impressive to say the least. Individually none of the genres would really have stood out, but mixed together they offer gameplay experiences that are just not possible elsewhere. While the visuals are not that great the audio is superb and Concursion offers plenty of challenging content. This is not a game that you will be completing in a hurry.

Gameplay: A challenging, but addictive blend of five different genres and styles.

Graphics: Plenty of variety, but I’m not a big fan of the visual style.

Sound: The soundtrack is great and seamlessly changes along with the playing styles

Solar Shifter EX

Solar Shifter EX

With its non-stop action and intense visuals, it is hard to believe that Solar Shifter EX is the work of a solo developer. The game is quite tough, but fans of bullet hell shooters will enjoy the challenge. The ability to shift around the screen definitely adds to the experience and while not perfect, Solar Shifter EX has a lot to offer fans of the genre.

Gameplay: Very tough, but the inclusion of checkpoints makes the challenge more manageable.

Graphics: Crank it up to “Extreme” and marvel at all the detail.

Sound: Features some nice tunes, but the sound effects lacks a little punch

Enemy Mind

Enemy Mind

Enemy Mind makes good use of the ship changing feature to offer an experience that is not only challenging, but extremely addictive. There is a lot more strategy involved than your typical side scrolling shooter and the local co-op mode makes it even more fun. Rounding off the package is some nice retro style visuals and a brilliant soundtrack. Depending on your skill with shooters, this game will keep you busy for a while and packs some nice bonuses to boost the replay value.

Gameplay: The ability to take control of any enemy ship complements the old school gameplay nicely.

Graphics: The visuals are a nice homage to the 8bit era.

Sound: Great sound effects and an awesome soundtrack by Rainbow Kitten

Velocity®Ultra

Velocity®Ultra

Velocity Ultra doesn’t exactly excel in the visual department, but it more than makes up for it with the addictive gameplay. At first glance it looks like a pure vertical shooter, but later levels introduce some nice puzzle elements. With fifty standard levels and plenty of unlockable challenges the game offers more than enough value for money.

Gameplay: Blends classic shooting with some modern puzzle solving.

Graphics: Functional but nothing outstanding.

Sound: Some nice old school style tunes

EPOCH

EPOCH

Mobile titles usually don’t fare very well on PC due to their simplicity or lack of options, but Uppercut Games have done a good job sprucing up EPOCH for its Steam release. The improved visuals and responsive controls make it more than just a quick port and the arcade style gameplay is perfect for killing some time between more in-depth titles. While the campaign can be completed rather quickly, there is plenty of replay value and the endless Arena mode also provides some more longevity.

Gameplay: Third person shooter stripped down to its most basic elements.

Graphics: The Unreal 3 engine is used to provide some nice visuals.

Sound: Decent, but not particularly memorable

Revolution Ace

Revolution Ace

I can’t deny that I had a lot of fun with Revolution Ace but it is definitely not a game that will appeal to everyone. The lengthy single player campaign is good, but it is the innovative multi-player modes that really steal the show. Whether in Versus or Battle Chains mode, challenging a human opponent is quite addictive. If you can overlook the rather generic visuals and soundtrack you’ll find a good, old school shooter lurking underneath.

Gameplay: Feels just like an old school arcade shooter.

Graphics: The graphics look a little bland despite using the Unreal Engine.

Sound: Fitting but not particularly memorable

Gundemonium Recollection

Gundemonium Recollection

If you like “bullet hell” shooters then you will have a blast with Gundemonium Recollection. Five levels might not sound like much but be prepared to spend a lot of time with this game if you truly want to master it. With a wealth of weapons and some really challenging gameplay you’ll be coming back to this one again and again.

Gameplay: Daunting if you are new to the genre, but loads of fun and very challenging.

Graphics: Nowhere near cutting-edge but very stylish and cute.

Sound: The new arranged soundtrack is excellent

Dimension Drive by 2Awesome Studio

Dimension Drive by 2Awesome Studio

It is not every day that we receive emails from engineers working for the European Space Agency, especially not about a multidimensional alien race attacking our universe! Fortunately the email was about the upcoming action title that the developers are developing in their free time and not about any imminent threat to our universe. Since they were kind enough to provide us with a playable build of the game we were able to get some hands on time with this unique shooter

Metrocide

Metrocide

There’s no denying that Metrocide is a very hard and frequently frustrating game. Spend enough time with it though and you’ll learn to appreciate the punishing difficulty level. Your first few kills might be sloppy and chaotic, but with practice you’ll be able to take down your marks with precision and stealth. It takes a lot of patience and dedication to get anywhere in this game, but it is quite satisfying when you pull off the perfect kill. Just be aware that the game can become repetitive.

Gameplay: If one hit kills and permadeaths are not your thing then neither will Metrocide.

Graphics: The 8-bit aesthetic takes a while to get used to, but the visuals are not without their charm.

Sound: No real soundtrack, but the ambient audio is very atmospheric
