3D Realms Anthology – Steam Edition

3D Realms created some of the best PC titles in the 90s bar none and the opportunity to add the whole bunch of them to your Steam library shouldn’t be missed. Whether you fondly remember playing these games as a kid or simply want to check out why these games revolutionist the Shareware industry don’t hesitate to splash out on this anthology. Just bear in mind that a lot of the titles included in the anthology can also be picked up for free from the 3D Realms website.

Gameplay: The anthology features 32 classic games spread across a multitude of genres.

Graphics: Since the majority of these games are pushing three decades in age the visuals are a little dated, but certainly not bad.

Sound: Many of the games feature great audio and the inclusion of the Re-Rockestrated Soundtrack is also a big plus

Alpha Kimori™ 1

Alpha Kimori has a very interesting backstory, and while it only clocks in at about five hours, it does set things up nicely for the rest of the trilogy. The visuals are a blast from the past, and fans of classic 16-bit RPGs will really enjoy the game. It is let down by some frequent backtracking, but definitely worth completing in order to uncover the whole story.

Gameplay: Classic SNES era JRPG but with less grinding and thankfully enemies are visible.

Graphics: Runs on the RPG Maker engine, but with some nice custom art.

Sound: Great theme song, crisp sound effects, and nice tunes

Pixel Puzzles 2: Anime packs the same innovations introduced by the previous entry in the series, such as rotating puzzle pieces and a sorting tray, but with a brand new theme. The anime illustrations are not only beautiful and colorful, but also a lot of fun to assemble which makes for an addictive experience. The annoying little crabs are also gone, but have been replaced by an equally annoying Pixel Fairy.

Gameplay: Challenging and very addictive.

Graphics: The new anime themed illustrations are beautiful.

Sounds: The music is nice and mellow, but the fairy can become very annoying.

Sweet Sins

The genre is certainly not lacking in titles, but dodging obstacles and bashing baddies as very cute versions of the seven deadly sins is still a ton of fun. The game features addictive gameplay, great visuals and catchy audio along with a very fair use of in-app purchases. If you crave something fast paced that can be played in short bursts, but will keep you hooked for hours then look no further than Sweet Sins.

Gameplay: The game is polished, simple to play and very addictive.

Graphics: The beautiful art style and adorable characters are highlights.

Sound: Catchy music that matches the style of the game perfectly

Poof VS The Cursed Kitty is one of those games that start of relatively simple and before you know it you are fighting for your life. The arcade style gameplay shows no mercy and finishing the game is not for the faint of heart. While it requires quick reflexes and lots of luck the addictive gameplay will ensure that you keep coming back for more.

Gameplay: Very hard but very rewarding.

Graphics: Colorful and cartoony Flash style visuals.

Sound: Fits the frenetic pace of the game

Don’t Shoot Yourself!

Don’t Shoot Yourself bills itself as a puzzle shmup, which is quite accurate as the focus is on carefully maneuvering your spaceship around different arenas while avoiding your own bullets. There are no enemies to defeat or power-ups to collect, but don’t think that this makes things any easier. Each arena offers a new challenge thanks to its size, shape and type of walls, which makes the game challenging and entertaining from start to finish.

Gameplay: Easy to play, but tricky to master.

Graphics: Simple, but colorful and unique.

Sound: Some nice background tunes

Paper Sorcerer

First-person role-playing games can be notoriously grindy, but Paper Sorcerer manages to deliver an old-school experience without any of the tedium. The visuals are stunning, the writing witty, and the bite-sized levels kept us coming back for more. The game is even more impressive considering that it is the work of basically one person, and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

Gameplay: Paper Sorcer offers old-school first-person RPG action without the grinding.

Graphics: The game features beautiful hand-drawn and inked visuals.

Sound: The soundtrack is great but might not appeal to everyone

Stick It To The Man!

Stick It To The Man is one of those titles that are so much fun to play that you don’t want it to end. Everything from the visuals to the audio is in a class all by itself and the superb humour is just the icing on the cake. The puzzle solving, while not very taxing, is still a blast and the quirky combination of platforming and point and click adventuring makes this a stand out title.

Gameplay: Inside the platform framework beats the heart of a point & click adventure.

Graphics: Fantastic visuals with plenty of memorable scenes.

Sound: Great music and even better voice overs

Not The Robots

I wasn’t sure if Not The Robots would live up to its wacky concept but it turned out to be much more addictive than I anticipated. Clearing out a level without taking damage is a rush and the stealth mechanics make for plenty of tense moments. It is not the easiest of games and it has to be completed in one sitting as there is no save feature but trust me it is worth it.

Gameplay: Eating furniture has never been this much fun!

Graphics: Nothing spectacular but gets the job done.

Sound: Good tunes and solid sound effects

Critical Point

I was expecting more from the story and less emphasis on the sex scenes considering the writer but this was not to be. The plot is still interesting and the location unique but the focus is firmly on the females and sexual content. Fans of the genre will enjoy it but others might not appreciate the mixture of sex and violence.

Gameplay: Lots of reading and a few choices here and there.

Graphics: Plenty of scenes and characters.

Sound: Japanese voice acting and decent enough music
